Well, there was a report on German TV recently about the people
driving around the Ring.

They showed a picture of a 3-series BMW that rolled over, and the roof
was partially squeezed as it had no roll cage.
It was said that the driver suffered a broken skull, and two
motorbikers were trying to hold the parts of his head together till
the ambulance arrived. But it was too late for him.

Better keep that in mind, too. Those rentals might have lots of
airbags and stuff, but not the safety equipment of racing cars.

: Well, there was a report on German TV recently about the people
: driving around the Ring.

I saw the same show, I believe.  it also had some old guy who has gone
every week to film a particular corner, and there are some comical, yet
somehow sobering images of 60's cars rolling over, spilling their picnic
baskets, maps, bottles and assorted unbelted occupants on the pavement.

: They showed a picture of a 3-series BMW that rolled over, and the roof
: was partially squeezed as it had no roll cage.
: It was said that the driver suffered a broken skull, and two
: motorbikers were trying to hold the parts of his head together till
: the ambulance arrived. But it was too late for him.

It was disturbing and made me re-evaluate my desire to go drive the 'Ring
myself.  That and the insane decision to allow bikes and cars to share the
track.  And also all the boy racers who go there to prove something (if it
was the same show, then perhaps you'll agree that the two guys who had put
all of their money into two Opel Kadetts were rather sad...)

: Better keep that in mind, too. Those rentals might have lots of
: airbags and stuff, but not the safety equipment of racing cars.

Not to mention the fact that any damage you do to a rental car comes out
of your pocket.  I would also check the limitations on the third-party
liability insurance in your travel insurance.  If you are excluded from
coverage then you could end up with a heavy bill if you wreck someone
else.  Or is the 'Ring considered a normal public road?

HAHA!
Enjoy every waking moment of it, Mark. (As I'm sure you will).

Oh....I've still to check out "Le Mans" fully but the other is certainly
useable, IMO.

Bruce.

Yes, on "vox".

Adenauer Forst.

Right, at Adenauer Forst.

And tour buses, and campers. Almost everything, like on other public
roads. It's that way since 1927.
And that's a rather good policy, because it forces people to be
careful, to expect anything behind the next corner. Else, they would
even risk more in attempts to set new personal bests. If they are many
slower vehicles out there, it's rather pointless to even try to do a
timed lap.

Well, that's okay.
BTW: a similar 1970s Opel Kadett C-type with rear wheel drive, but
modern parts and a 16V-engine, did a 7.50min lap in a contest, see
http://www.castrol-haugg-cup.com/6_rekorde.htm
The car is shown on the starting page of the CHC-site, and it was
parked on a trailer next to me during this years 24h-race.

I don't know how "normal" it is as insurance and legal issues are
concerned, but it's considered a public road during public traffic.
