Thx mate, good to know I'm not too old yet :-)))

I guess there's still a few laps left in me then, it's just so much
easier to know where you stand overall by learning one track and
comparing with others......

Not quite ready for Nordschleife yet though :-)

Wanna hear something crazy...

I actually talked my wife into going to the ring. Now all we need to do is
figure out how to sneak a rental on. :-)

Sneak? it's hardly expensive!

>Sneak? it's hardly expensive!

For cars AFAIK 20 DM (or US$ 11) for a lap.

But if you don't read the contract conditions of the rental car
properly, and crash it on the Nordschleife, it might get a little more
expensive.

I was thinking about getting a rental BMW for a 12 lap
"Gleichmaessigkeits-Pruefung" (regularity test) on the Nordschleife,
but all sorts of "motorsport events" and "car testing" were ruled out
by the rental car company I checked.

So I would recommend to check in advance the legal status of the
Nordschleife (I would guess that during public driving hours it's
considered a public one-way toll road with separated traffic lanes
where all rules of public traffic are in effect), and the opinion of
the rental company about taking a car there.

Somewhere on the Web, there are funny reports from two americans
students taking a rental 7-series BMW out on the Ring, crashing it in
the Fuchsroehre. Apparently, they got away with it, but had a hard
time explaining the circumstances. The repair bill would have been
about the equivalent of 1000 laps on the Ring.
The next time, they've chosen another rental company, to avoid
questions.

[snip]

And do keep in mind that there is no insurance included in the fee for
damaging, err, 'Nuerburgring hardware'. The rates are reasonable,
though: DM 700,- for 20 meters of brand new double guard rail (between
Fuchsroehre and Adenauer Forst) is what I had to pay. But that was 15
years ago, so it might have become more expensive in the meantime...

This year it was DM20 for cars, DM22 (or 23) for bikes. 5 laps for bikes
(which I took) was DM96.
Worth every penny! :)

Really? Cool. I was under the impression that if you show up in a 911 with
Budget Rent-a-Car stickers all over it you'd not be able to use the venue.
(naturally I won;t be telling Budget I'm going to the Ring.)

Summer of 2000 or 2001. Not only that! But we are going to schedule the Spa
F1 event in that time frame. We will bicycle mostly but use a rental at the
Ring. Faster that way. So it's like a vacation for me that my wife will also
enjoy. I'm sure she's thinking the same thing. (Betcha I like touring Italy
more than she like the Ring. I Win!) :-) Anyway, we are going to go to
Monaco and I don't care how far I have to drag the needle guy, I'm getting
Senna's helmet tattooed to my chest at Portier. (Think there're laws against
public flagellation?)

There was a great article in Road & Track years and years ago about
cycling around Europe and following the F1 circus.  This was 1972, mind
you, but it really was a well written piece.  It might even have been
Peter Egan, who is one of their best writers.  Lots of good words about
Jackie "Superfly" Stewart etc.  The author had just finished a military
stay in Germany, sold his car and travelled with a friend; it could have
been the script for a "buddy" film.  some funny bits about burning out the
brakes on an ancient touring bike flying down a mountain pass.
