(GPL) replay size and other observations (papy??)

by Michael Barlo » Thu, 26 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I took a couple of my old F1 replays and transfered them to a VCR
tape.  while watching them I noticed a few odd things..

Recording during the race(s)..
(race #1)
All graphics turned on.
the graphics slider thingy was 1/4 from the left.
(race #2)
Only the dirt and dust was turned off
the graphics slider thingy was 1/4 from the left.

Recording to the VCR
All graphics ON and the slider centered.

Race #1 showed the dirt and dust when ever my car was off the track and
there was dust and/or dirt to kick up.

Race #2 didn't show any at all even in the same situations.

Someone mentioned a while ago about what each set of numbers in the
replays were as to creating some kind of a replay statistics
application.  Some where the possition along the track in X inches, some
were the possition from the edge of the track, ect.. for each car.  They
also mentioned that there were other numbers that they didn't know what
they were.  I'll take a guess that these extra numbers were the graphics
options that were turned on and where and when ect.. these graphics
would be shown.

If the above is true, wouldn't it be better not to have those numbers
in there at all? Then to let the computer that is watching the replay
later on decide when and where these graphics should be shown?  A big
bonus would be to the download able size of the replays.

As a client, I need to turn a bunch of graphics off. As a host, I need
to turn even more graphics off.  But while watching the replays, I want
to turn everything on.  While watching a replay (recorded as the host)
when I turn everything on, I'm missing a lot of action.  While watching
a replay (as a client) I'm not missing as much, but still missing some
odd things.

If I can race online as a host and just by chance I get a full field of
clients with perfect connections and the entire race is chuck full of
action..  I would like to show the VCR copy of the replay to friends.
But if under the same situation I cant see dust and dirt kicked up and
the smock from tires that were locked up, and this and that ect..  that
will make for a very dull VCR tape.

Hope I'm explaining that right(?),
Mike

(GPL) replay size and other observations (papy??)

On the same subject.. (Replays)  There were a bunch of times I wanted
to go from driver A to driver E.  But in order to do that I had to go
through Drivers B,C, and D before I'd get to driver E.  A big
improvement would be to maybe (driver A = car #2, Driver E = Car #12)
Type in ALT+ Car# then enter (ALT12 <E>) or some sequence there of.

Then there were times in these replays when the cars entering turn 1
were racing side by side. One car would triumph and approach a third
car.  The best camera angles were different for each scene.  when
switching from one camera angle to another I'd have to do the same thing
as above and go from one camera angle to the next, to the next, to the
next, till I finally came to the one I was after.   Between each camera,
there would be the screen snow.  There's another thing that could be
changed.  Then, when I went from One driver to the other.  If the
drivers were close to each other and still with in the same camera,
There would be an abrupt camera change.  If there was a way to go from
the first driver to the next (while still using the same camera) without
having to have that abrupt change...  Maybe having the focus on the
first driver, then pressing ALT+- (ALT-) There would be a transaction
smoothly sliding from the first to the second.  So long as both drivers
are seen with in the same camera.

I could just edit the VCR tape, but in one race for a few seconds there
could be a splice every couple inches of the tape.

Basically, I need more camera control available.

Again, Hope I described this right,
Mike

(GPL) replay size and other observations (papy??)

by Michael Barlo » Thu, 26 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I've taped 4 replays so far.  Another thing I noticed is that the
engines go quiet when ever a driver is braking or at least off the
accelerator.  It's true that noise levels are lower in these situations,
but not dead quiet.  It sounds as if the drivers pressed in the clutch
and shut the engine off while approaching the corners. Please give us
some engine sounds!!  (from camera's 1 & 2)  Next is the engine sounds
suddenly appear out of no where when a car is approaching, and disappear
way too soon when they are leaving the camera.  A good example of this
last one is Camera 1 stationed at (I think) T-8.  when the cars are
going up the hill through the esses, the sound disappears too abruptly
and way too soon.

Just a few things to look in to for future releases,
mike

Just out of interest, how do you do that? I'd like to demonstrate GPL to

With TV-out on the video card you view the replay on TV, hence save it to a
VCR tape.
