I was wondering if anyone happens to have the steering wheel, gear shifting accessory to enhance their simulation.  I've seen this thing in many catalogs, but I don't quite have the money at the time, and I'm satisfied with the joy stick.  I may be able to justify buying it if someone says that it's great for the simulation.

Any comments?

There is a version of the Thrustmaster T1 wheel/peddle assembly
specifically designed for Papyrus NASCAR racing - called the BB1
(Billy_Bob_1).

It is just like the T1, except the wheel has one of those "suicide knobs"
on it and there is a beverage attachment suitable for a beer can,
including tall boys.

Disclaimer: I think Papyrus NASCAR Racing is the best racing sim on the
PC, and a Thrustmaster T1 owner which a great addition to any racing game.

I have the Thrustmaster T1 steering wheel / pedal combination and I wouldn't
race without it!  If you are a true fan of the various racing sims, ie
IndyCar, WC, or NASCAR, you *MUST* get one!  the Chips & Bits mail order house
sells them for around $109 plus S&H.  I paid $129 for mine when they first
came out and haven't ever regretted it.  Also, Thrustmaster has the best
customer service in any business that I have ever seen or heard of.  Several
people, including myself, need replacement parts, and  simply sent them e-mail
and they had parts in the mail at no charge to me, the next day.  One guy on
the Papyrus BBS even had his pedal springs break when in heated competition
for the championship and when he told Thrustmaster this, they Fed-Ex'd the
parts to him via OverNight delivery at no charge!

I agree.  If you are at all serious about driving sims, and face it, you're reading this newsgroup so you are,
I fully recommend the Formula T1 steering wheel combo.  Here in Australia they cost $295.00 which
really hurt to pay out, but in 6 months, I haven't regretted it for a moment.  BTW, I also have a simulation
***pit that I made for under $50.00 that makes it the most realistic sim I have ever used.  You actually sit
inside the***pit and drive.  Oh well, lucky I am the only person in a 3 bedroom house, otherwise I'd
have run out of room.

Thanks for the information.  By the way, since I'm not familiar with these wheel/pedal accessories, I don't feel silly in asking.  Does the Thrustmaster plug into the joystick port, or does it have its separate card to plug into?

It plugs into the joystick port -- it must be a port that supports 2
joysticks.  I just use the port that comes on my sound card and it works great.

My T1 came with an adapter that lets it use only one port.  Steering using
X axis and each pedal uses a direction on the Y axis.  Works great!

OK... I think I'll be getting at T1 soon, so let me get this straight...

I DON'T need a TWO ports, just a port that supports two joysticks?  I
currently use a thrustmaster-Pro joystick.  As far as I can tell, the throttle
on the joystick is part of "joystick 2", so I guess I'm all set.  Is that
right?  (My joystick port is in a Soundblaster-16-Pro)

Thanks,
Steve

It actually uses only one "port", but uses both joystick inputs, x-axis of
both, one for steering, and the other for brake/gas.  That's why the single
"port" must support 2 joysticks.  This is usually not a problem as most do,
but some of the cheaper cards will only allow one joystick.

Yes, that is exactly correct, and your SB16 will work.

Let me reiterate.  My T1 came with an adapter that lets it use only one port.
Steering uses the X axis and each pedal uses a direction on the Y axis.

My controller only supports 1 port.  When I go to the calibration menu in
NASCAR I only calibrate Port 1.  The adapter is specifically made to support
one joystick port (2 axis, 2 buttons)

Perhaps the older T1's did not come with this adapter?

Would anyone know if a joystick port on a Pro Audio Spectrum 16
supports 2 joysticks, and in turn would support a T1?

That's cool!  And no, mine did not come with this adapter so I assume all of the originals didn't.
Does that mean that you can only use either the buttons or the "stick" shift?

It's nice to see that they added this.  Thrustmaster just keeps getting better and better in my
book.  Everyone I know has had excellent response from them.  I have a 2 year old Mark I
Joystick that isn't working and they even said that if I mailed it to them they would fix it and send it
back -- at no cost to me!

Sorry for the misunderstanding at first.  And thanks for not flaming me right off the bat!

I think that all of the sound cards support 2 joysticks, but according to Bob Hruska the new
T1s come with an adapter that will allow them to work with a "single" joystick port, so
I guess it doesn't really matter after all.

Unfortunately, it disables the buttons on the console.  The shifter uses
buttons 1 and 2.  But it's still better than ripping out my cheap IO card
and buying one that allows me to turn of the game port so I can use my SB16
ports.
