NASCAR 3 BETA Preview at GA-Sports

by Scott B. Huste » Thu, 02 Sep 1999 04:00:00

I have completed my next installment of the preview process of NASCAR
Racing 3 at GA-Sports.  This BETA Preview builds upon the ALPHA preview
that I had done.

I have also added a question and answer section where I attempted to
answer the most popular questions I receive concerning N3.  Im sorry I
cannot respond to all emails and correspondences, but I have attempted
to answer as many questions as I can in this preview.

Thanks,

Q: In the screenshots, it appears the cars are leaning in the corners.
Is
                       that accurate?
A: Yes. You definitely have a pronounced handling
feel in N3 and when
you follow a car around the track you can see it
lean in the corners and
                       as it makes harsh maneuvers.

This is the closest to what I was after.  "What the car felt like".  In
N2 there was very little body roll while in the car.  This answer of
your's suggest that that feeling has been improved drastically.
Although, as you said, it's still not up to GPL's standards, it's at
least a whole lot better then N2. This whole article you wrote sounds a
whole lot like you did your home work and are giving us your truthful
opinion.  I will be at least downloading the Demo (if there is one) when
it comes out.

All the other posts about N3 and the feel of the car, in my opinion,
sounded like the writer didn't even try the beta but just wrote
something to satisfy the masses.  This is also very true with other
products, The writers, to me, write something suggesting they knew what
they were talking about when they really never even see the thing.  Two
such writers are friends of the family, They say them selves that they
never look at a product but just write something to make it sound good.
Funny thing about it is that they get a whole lot of letters from
readers telling them how much they trust their opinions.

There is a well written preview at Operation Sports.
http://www.operationsports.com/ReviewVault/reviews.asp?game=nascar3pc
Here is a clip:

"The first thing I noticed even while leaving the pits is that this
thing "feels" like a stock car. The power of the engine is modeled much
better in my estimation and turning is a definite improvement. Winston
Cup cars are heavy. I never got a feeling of weight with NASCAR 2. With
NASCAR 3 the difference is immediately noticeable. In the corners, the
car seems to lean now. At least that's the feeling you get. At this
point, I couldn't be any happier with the way the car feels. By the
way, this is without force-feedback. I decided to try the game with the
TSW2 wheel first. Also, keep in mind these are initial impressions. As
I write this, I've driven exactly one 10% length race."

The GA-Sports preview reads like it was written by following a
Microsoft Word template, just filling in the details.

No Trucks?

No Fair.

I was just starting to like them. And I will miss Flemington. Oh well I'm
sure someone will make a patch, maybe not, I seem to be the only person who
actually liked Flemington.

how can i possibly trust a review from a site that has GPL rated with a "92"
and need for arcade HS IV-THE REVENGE or some such at "96"??!! and SCGT at
"95"! and something for the NFS 3 at 94....

that said, this particular reviewer seems to be very interested in doing a
very fair and in-depth review....but i'm going to have to take any
conclusions with a grain of salt based on these kinds of numbers

I am assuming you are referring to the score at Operation
Sports.  In our defense, and my defense in particular.
Each game is scored by different reviewers.  The same
person usually doesn't get to write all of the reviews for
one genere, such as racing.  In my defense, those scores
were before I joined Operation Sports ;-)

You can rest assured that I will be very fair and complete
in this preview and any other work I do.  If you have read
any of my work at all, you know I am a die hard sim racer.

Just for the record, I would have rated GPL above the other
3 ;-)

Believe it or not, different people have different tastes (yes, I know
it's totally shocking).

Do you think we rate NFS the same way that we would rate a NASCAR? No. Am
I going to mark down NFS because it doesn't allow me to make a gear ratio
adjustment?

Well, if I was only writing for this newsgroup, sure I would. But I'm not
writing only for this newsgroup.

Doug reviewed GPL for us. While we were all amazed at the incredible
detail of the game, the playing time was shortened for us because of the
game's steep learning curve.

And I know many game developers would love a 92 :).

Now, in regards to Jeff...

We hired Mr. Downey just for one major reason. Jeff knows racing. While I
watch NASCAR, Jeff has been there and seemingly knows everything about it
:). That combined with the fact that he's an excellent writer makes him a
good fit for OS.

Now, I would be shocked to find out that you would agree 100% with
everything he says too. (Oh yeah, don't forget he's answering your NASCAR
3 questions :
http://www.operationsports.com/ReviewVault/reviews.asp?game=nascar3pc)
It's very unusual to see everyone agree especially in r.s.s

Thanks for letting me explain. If you have any other questions, let me
know on- or off-list and I'll try to go more in depth.

Let's not get carried away, Dan.  My racing is strictly the
weekend variety.  I've never been in Winston Cup...LOL

Unless Robert Yates is reading.  I'd be much faster than
Irwin ;-p

Flemington rules man!  I'm right behind you!  The track I'll miss more though
is Louisville Motor Speedway.  I love driving on my local short track.  ;)

Jeff, I was indeed referring to that page....and i figured those #s all came
from different people, so couldn't be directly compared. but i kinda wanted
to....uhhh..."rattle your cage" a bit (to add a recently-famous quote)....

the same person couldn't *possibly* have assigned all those numbers :) i
just thought it was funny....
so my post was really more tongue-in-cheek; i shoulda made that more clear.
from reading your whole preview (and plans for the future of it), i can tell
you definately are a bona fide simracer. I'm really glad OS hired "one of
us"... (but why couldn't it have been me :)?)  We (well, I at least)
definately appreciate that!

have fun with the beta and keep us posted (as you have done a very good job
of so far)

Ok Dan. When N3 comes out here is what we are gonna do. Beg, plead, and
generally whine and pester the folks at sim***world to fix the old truck
tracks. Then we start a racing series on Kali with only those tracks.
(Flemington, Louisville, and South Boston). And we shall call it the.....
(drum roll)
The Series of Misfit Speedways.
(everyone sing... Why am I such a misfit.... why am I such a half wit....)
