I wish I had the same game as Joe. I can't find this realistic driving
model :-( But I agree it is the best in the genre, with stunning
graphics.

A couple of days ago I finally received my airmailed copy of RC I ordered
from the U.K. and after a couple of days driving it I pretty much agree
with Joe's review.

Definitely RC is no GPL in the physics department but one thing it is is *fun*,
and while the damage model might seem simple at first look, once you enter
a rally in simulation mode you begin to realize all those mistakes do cause
damage, personally I'm having a hard time keeping my car repaired enough
to be able to pass inspection enough to continue to the next stage, I had
to complete two entire snow stages missing 2nd gear then 3rd gear after
neglecting to repair my transmission.

The feeling of speed at times is amazing, RC really manages to make you
feel like you are going *very* fast on some twisty roads, and at times
the road sections are so beautiful that you want to pull over and look at
the way the sunlight comes through the trees.

But it's got a few problems too, the brakes are much too powerful and annoying
at times, sometimes all I want to do is tap the brakes to swing the back end
around but instead my speed drops 50mph, also the grass is too sticky in
places, at least if they are going to have sticky grass like that they
should make the road a bit wider, like Joe said, hopefully this will be
remedied in upcoming patches, the 3 axis joystick support is broken, maybe
when it's fixed being able to hold down the throttle at the same time as
I brake (as I do in GPL) will allow me to use the brakes for pendulum turns
and moves that I see in Rally coverage on TV.

So overall RC is no GPL and it's not perfect, but for me it doesn't have
to be, it's a very fun rally sim/game in it's own right and definitely the
best game in the rally category so far, I really hope Magnetic Fields takes
the time to patch the few annoying things like 3 axis support that are
keeping this game from being a sure classic the way NFS1 was.

RC is the game I will be spending time with when not in the***pit of my
GPL Ferrari trying to beat my PB at the Nurburgring.

Good review Joe.

Hmm ... "The aforementioned GPL die-hards may be the only ones who aren't
thrilled by this game. But then they are often like Mikey in the old cereal
commercial - they hate everything! "

A bit uncalled for IMO. I know people who aren't GPL die-hards and still
don't like the game, let alone "be thrilled". And they don't hate everything
(me niether), just poor games that promise more than deliver.

I'm not sure if you have a sense of humour, but that's what's required
there.

Frankly - I'm sick of the GPL-Faithfull who seem to forget that all
we're trying to do here is enteratin ourselves....For a lot of people -
that's EXACTLY what GPL stops being after an hour.

I`m not an *** GPL player, but the satisfaction achieved after a nice
lap can`t be matched by any other game that I`ve played, not to mention an
online duel,with a friend.Great game!

C'mon, try a little harder: If you steer to the right the car goes right, if
you steer left it goes left, if you brake it stops and if you hit the
throttle it accelerates.
This is called realism, isn't it? ;-)

Not to mention that hyperrealistic arcade mode: Dozens of slow cars in your
way, when you're in a hurry, not letting you pass when you want to and
braking when you would least expect it... reminds me of my daily ride to
work...

I totally agree with you!

I'm absolutely no die-hard either (just once won a online race at Spa because
the others had trouble) but GPL really gets you where it has to. I've been
playing N3 for a couple of times now and must say I like the graphics and so
on but switching back to GPL is really a relief. You then realize actually how
good this sim is! I absolutely don't have to win as long as I can put down
some consistency I'm satisfied.

And for a lot of people GPL is the only sim that gives them that
entertainment and joy of achievement, so what's your point? Why should care
if some people find other titles unentertaining?

This is Usenet, people have different opinions. Get used to it

Sense the hypocritical reply to my point.  I've have voiced MY opinion -
which you say I am entitled to do - yet you go off on one all about
it...make up your mind!

I personally like GPL a lot. While for ME it's a "great game" I
recognize that for the vast majority of gamers it is not. Too
inaccessible, too high a learning curve. Now if they'd thrown in a
nice arcade mode it would be a totally different story.

Beware!! This is a rant not an objective review. I have had this game for a
week and played it hard. I like it very much and would recommend it. But it
does have many faults - some of them to be addressed in a soon to be
released patch (now where have I heard that before). I dont intend to list
them all here - I'm not reviewing it - I just feel strongly that some might
be mislead by such an over enthusiastic review. If you love rally games you
will buy this anyway - just be prepared that at first you might not like the
driving/physics model. Stick with it - it'll be worth it.

That's a fair point, one I hope got across in my review - you do need
to drive it for a few hours to get used to the physics and steering.
