why is this dude talking about accidents happening in turn three or
four, when the damn track only has two turns?

Most Nascar tracks have 4 turns.  For instance, at Atlanta, turn 1 is after
the start/finish line, and becomes turn 2 at the apex of the turn.  Thus
turns 3 & 4 are at the other end of the track.  Generally turns 1&3 are when
you enter a corner, and 2&4 are exiting the corner.

Apparently you haven't watched much racing on TV. :)

Americans have a short attention span, so while we Europeans can focus
on a turn that lasts 180 degrees, Americans can't, so they decided to
split those long turns in two....

I have no idea why they do this.......:-)

I think they use such a terminology not because "they are American" but
because it's more practical.
Think at your spotter talking about an "accident at the beginning of the
first curve" instead of "accident at curve 1".

A European

you're right I haven't seen much oval racing on TV.  not only because
there is no oval racing on norwegian telly, but also because it's so
insanely dull. :)

My teacher said there's no such thing as a stoopid question.  So I figured
it was just stoopid people asking smart questions.

Some things to remember about American Ovals.  Many are very very BIG.
yer spotter saying there is an accident somewhere up ahead for the next half
mile isn't very accurate.
2nd, the Indianapolis factor.  This big mother has 4 separate turns
connected by short straights(chutes we call'em)  So when other ovals were
built, even those with only two continuous turns, the same naming convention
used by Indy was followed.
3rdly...when has America ever worried about how/why the rest of the world
does something?  Should we rename turn one to Maggots?  Turn two Druids?
Turn three 'Brought to you by Budwieser, America's most popular Beer,
Budwieser Brewing Company, St. Louis Missouri.'  Turn 4 could be 'Marlboro
turn 4 at the Daytona International Raceway'
  it just is....

Nascar started when there was no TV. At that times
you had to go to track to see a race. Since it was, for them,
insanely dull, to wait 2 minutes at some corner to see 10 sec.
of racing, they invented Nascar. But they wanted more
corners, so they split them in two, lol. Now you know.

that would be cool.  on the local racetrack around here, we have a
turn called "the butcher".  a well fitting name for that particular
turn, even if the name is a coincidence lost on most people nowadays. :)

Nah, they wouldn't say "curve", it rolls the tongue too much.  They use
"taahurn"  ;)
