Kind of disappointed in GTR2

Hi,

I have the GTR mod for F12002 and GTR1.  I got GTR2 the other day.  I have
to admit I'm pretty disappointed in the realism of GTR2.  I don't *think*
I've got it set up wrong, I am for sure in 'simulation' mode.  But the cars
are WAY easier to drive than I expected.  It feels like the traction control
and ABS are turned on.  The Function keys report they are turned off.  To
me, the old GTR mod for F12002 is quite a bit more realistic in terms of the
way the cars feel and handle.  The acceleration and way the engine "comes on
the cam" in that game is very realistic IMO.  I never did really play GTR1
that much because I preferred the GTR mod.  I was hoping GTR2 would be a
major improvement, but I don't think so.

There is plenty of debate about how endurance vehicles should drive, but
if you want a more lively drive then try the NAP mod:

http://www.racesimulations.com/GTR2/downloads/1067.html

If you like historic saloons then you can't do better than the Power &
Glory 60s Tourismo mod:

http://www.gtlw.co.uk/

I haven't driven stock GTR2 physics since the availability of those two
mods which are excellent IMHO.

Cheers

Yea, these cars are designed to be stable with lots of grip so why do
people always think harder means more realistic?

Well, because it is, actually.  Sure they have lots of grip, but still, they
*are* over 600 hp after all!  There is simply no such thing as an
easy-to-drive 600 hp 1100 kg. car, sorry!  400 hp, yes.  600+ hp, no.  It's
the way the peaky engine comes on the cam so ***ly.  GTR2 is quite
arcade-ish.  I gar-un-tee the GTR mod for F12002 is way more realistic.

My view on it is that once you take away the exhilaration of driving at
such speeds even within grip limits, and the forces acting on the body
lap after lap then the simulation seems quite tame. Driving on the edge
will only wear the tyres out early in a stint.

A touring car style sprint at qualifying speeds each lap makes for a
better sim IMHO. The NAP mod arguably exaggerates the amount of sliding
but makes for more entertainment in a sim, especially if you are running
shorter than real life races.

I think you make your choice and run with what works for you.

Cheers

It doesn't fully trip my trigger either, but to me it is definitely the best
of any of the ISI based games.

What cars have you driven in RL? I think you are FOS but will give you
some leeway if you can prove that you know what you are talking about.

Actually, they are not that difficult to drive. Today's endurance cars are
not like the GTL cars. Modern tires, suspensions, aero downforce and brakes
make them relatively easy to handle within their envelope. Have you driven
long enough for the tire wear to set in? Then they become quite a bit
tougher to handle. I even believe that the GTL cars drive much easier than
the sim IRL. I drove a bit back then and was lucky enough back in the '60s
to take an AC Cobra around Road America for a couple of laps and it was
nowhere close to being as tough to drive as the model in GTL even on cold
tires. It tended to understeer a lot on turn entry (instead of being
insanely loose under braking) and was a bit loose under acceleration, but
very driveable. I have driven a lot of fast cars over the years and very few
are as tough to drive as some of sims make them out to be.

I got thisNAP mod after seeing this post and like it

BUT

It has changed a couple things that I do NOT like

.... maybe someone can help

first, at the end of a race, I used to get a message at the top of the
screen saying race over and the crew chief chatting
....now it instantly flashes to a replay of me crossing S/F ...hate that,
how can I change it?

second, shifts seem to take a lot longer ... i.e I pull on the paddle and it
takes for ever ( not really, just in comparison ;-) for the gear to change
.... in some corners where you need to downshift several times after a long
chute, this really bugs me ... in a real car you can skip a gear, but not
with my TSW/paddle shifter controller

.... is there a way to change this?

lastly, I don't much care for the faster cars and love the little Elise or
Vertigo in single make races ... are there "generic" setups available for
these little dears somewhere?

I figured out this part .... I created a new driver after installing the Mod
in case I needed to change controller settings and to store new set-ups and
make them easier to find .... I didn't edit the new .plr file completely

But,

I'd still like a source of starter set-ups and a shifting that doesn't
"blip" so noticably ... is this in the .plr too?   I didn't see it but it
is, I believe, in rFactor

Thanks, that's what I figured. I think the same can be said for flight
sims too.
