just bought IndyCar the other day and have been playing it ever since.
Unsure of how to get an optimal setup though. Is there a list of setups
by track on an ftp site (like there was for WC)????

any pointers appreciated...

I usually start with the ACE setup for each track, and tweak (very) moderately
to cut cornering adhesion until I can no longer handle it. This gives a few
more RPM's in the straightaways, and some exciting 4 wheel slides in the
replays. Alas, I can't top the posted records at some tracks, and fall
sometimes 4 or more seconds behind the hot lap times posted here.

Enjoy, enjoy, humm, ok. But I regret you can't imagine how
frustrating it is when you are unable to manage to make your
car turn in sharp corners :(

Even with the "linear steering" setup, in sharp corners I have
to slow down quite to the complete stop (non ring tracks).

Which setup is to be changed to alter this situation ?

  TIA!

Well - some corners have to be taken as slow as 30mph. If you
are unable to go that fast, something is wrong with your
input device (too sensitive?), or you happen to run on
regular tires while it is actually raining at the track! I had
this problem once and since there is no water spray, it took
me a while to realize what was wriong with my car! Check the
weather settings (it never rains at ovals, which is maybe why
your car handles ok there)

I use a regular joystick with non-linear steering and still
hold some of the internet records. This is not the problem.

Check the weather first. If that's not it, run the FAST
default in Long Beach and tell me what your speeds are in
the corners. I can run consistent 55sec laps in the FAST
setup there. the slowest corners are all about 40-50mph.

You might try turning off rain, or putting on rain tires. It worked for me :)!
Full stop is a bit too extreme; you can't win many races that way.
