Increase in performance with 2 12M M3D V2 Boards SLI?

by Don Farringto » Fri, 29 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I currently run a PII 350  (64M ram) with a Diamond Fire Glide Pro 1000
and a single Diamond Monster 3D Voodoo 2 8M.  I tried to buy another 8M
Monster 3D Voodoo 2 but found them to be back ordered to March or later
(if then-Diamond says they are discontinuing).  I wasnt expecting a
great improvement in fps (currently 17-19 on grid) but then the 8m board
was going for advertised $100.   I have now (probably foolishly
expensive) ordered two of the 12m boards to run SLI.  What kind of
performance increase (GPL fps) should I expect?  Anybody out there with
similar setup?

I have a P2 350 with two M3D 2 12MB in SLI. I can run smooth (I think about
27-36 fps after the start)with all cars and graphics except at the start or
when I get right up to a wall or guard rail and its a little slow . I turned
down the mirror details, but I think its mostly the CPU slowing. Its still
very playable and the best thing is running GPL and other games at higher
resolution. I went from a single M3D 2 12MB to SLI and I feel it was worth
it. I also put a Stealth cooling fan on both my cards. They get very hot and
in SLI setup there is less room between the two hot cards so you need the
fans to keep the air moving.
