"The cars become available on a point system, as you race. Under both online
and single player, you accumulate points for finishing in the top 3. These
points are used to unlock the more advanced cars, but don't be too disheartened
by this, bear in mind this is an Online Racing Simulator, the points system
ensures that new or inexperienced racers don't get the hands on something too
quick, too early. It's also a crafty way of maintaining a progressive learning
curve for drivers. Experienced sim racers will have their hands on all the cars
within a relatively short time frame."

I hate games that make you 'unlock' the cars.  If I paid for the game, give me
ALL the cars, dammit...

Agreed. If I hadn't forked out real money for the S1 release I'd not
have bothered building up the points. The basic cars aren't very
entertaining IMO. They demonstrate the working code well, and they were
interesting enough for a while in the initial demo, but that was
*forever* ago.

that.  - Yoda.
I thought driving was part of the fun... ;)

annoying!

If I were in charge of design, I wouldn't have you unlock cars, but it's
not a big deal.  I unlocked the RB4 and FX0 within an hour of playing,
IIRC.

Maybe, but if you can't access all the cars, you're not getting all the game
you've PAID for.  I have Gran Tourismo for the PS1.  I can't win the races at
the "b" level(whatever the highest is).  Therefore, there are 3 or 4 cars that
I can't use.  That's bull, IMO.
You should be able to race every car in the game on every track in the game.
Whether or not you could control said combo isn't relevant...

Sure, not a big deal for you.  I also watched you lap Silverstone 10 seconds
per lap faster than me.  Imagine if you had to break the 8:30 mark at the Ring
in the Eagle in order to unlock the Ferrari and Lotus.  Some of us STILL
wouldn't be able to access those two cars.

Sigh, you'd never make it in the racing game industry.
I bet you even believe that the game should be about racing,
rather than stuffing in more "Gameplay".

You don't have specific goals to achieve to unlock the cars, you just
accumulate points. The better your results the more points you get, but you
can get them in on-line races too, so as long as you finish 3rd or higher,
you'll get the points sooner or later.

Considering your reputation for finishing races, I would think you should be
able to get the points as quickly as the next chap on-line, and the AI
really aren't that hard to beat as long as you don't crash.

If it's as rigid as LFS, I think it's a bad idea, but if it's as fluid as
GT, I think it's brilliant, because you can tune up a car you do own to race
better cars in the same category. The rules aren't so rigid.

It's the same with story based FPS games. If you get stuck on Half-Life,
you're stuck completely because it's 100% linear, but if you get stuck on
Deus Ex, you can take care of a secondary objective and find a way around
the problem.

It's all about the implementation, not the concept.

It takes 1 hour to get all the cars unlocked... and thats one hour of seat
time some kidz need VERY badly before they can select the LX6 in an online
race :)
You won't find the LX6 any fun before you have had a few hours in the other
cars anyway.
The developers actually wanted a lower credit level needed, while a lot of
the betatesters voted for a much highter threshold, in the end I think we
found a good compromise.

Pick a 3 lap race at the shortest track, place in the top 3 to accumulate
credits and after a few repeats you will be able to select the RB4... after
that you will have no difficulty getting the rest of the points needed to
unlock the LX6. Please try it and I'm sure you will agree it was not any
problem at all ;)
