I got so frustrated with GT that I haven't played it in several months.  In a
solid weekend(friday - sunday) of playing, I was not able to win the
championship that would allow me to access the best cars.  We're talking
several hours each day.  Couldn't do it, got pissed off, it's collecting dust
now.

Ah, so it's like collecting experience points in Diablo 2?  Ok, well that's a
*little* better.  I still disagree with that in principle, though.

No Eldred, it's not even close to being that hard!  Really..  just try it
and you'll see.  The AI is kind of a pushover.  At least on the settings I
used - 'Quick', which I believe is one step below 'Pro'.

I do agree with you.  I've never liked the "unlock" concept; a carry-over
from console games.  I'm just saying that it's not so bad as it might seem.

Why a 3 lapper, I went for a 1 lapper worked much quicker. Now I have
got into the 200 pts i'm more relaxed about hitting the 2 top cars.

Winning a 3-lap pro race is the shortest race that gets you the 'full' 48
points. 1 or 2 lap races will get you the points very nearly as quickly, but
if you just want to get the points to unlock the cars (and who can blame you
;-)) there isn't any advantage to doing longer races.

I started out with some 10 lap races thinking I was getting 12 points per
lap for a win, but quickly realised that it wasn't the quickest way to get
the points, although it probably is the best way to learn the track /and/
earn points at the same time.

I think you get 1 point for winning a drag race too. I tried a couple to see
if it was an easier way to get points (it only takes a few seconds to do a
run) but it didn't seem like it, and 600 drag races would have been a pretty
boring way to get the points ;-)

That's a very good point actually. Mind you, it didn't help the kid I
met this morning who kept causing no end of trouble in a car he clearly
couldn't handle.

ME: "You might want to learn to drive that LX m8"
Muppet: "Can you drive the LX Andrew?"
ME: "Not well."
Muppet: "Then shut up!"

Well, that's me told then! I love a reasoned debate, it's why I enjoy
the flight-sim group so much :-)

To be fair though, what did I expect racing on a Saturday morning?
Hardly prime time for old gits like me.
