Hi all,

I would appreciate any comment concerning a minimum
hardware requirement to run GPL:

- Can I run GPL on a AMD K6-266 without 3D accelerator card?
(I don't need fancy graphics objects and I don't need
any AI cars. I just want to try GPL's racing physics model in a
realistic way)

Thanks for any comments.

I have a 200 MMX, 64 MEG Ram with Diamond Stealth 200, and Voodoo2 SLI,
but I bought a Hercules 8MB Thriller card, and with horizon, skid marks,
drivers arms, driver textures off, mirrors set to "cars only", I get 36
fps (drops to 19 in a group) in Rendition mode, which is faster than
3Dfx. If you are as hooked with GPL as a lot of us, get the thriller.

Sorry, but you'll need a 3DFX or Rendition card to get any real feel for the
physics model.  I use a funky old 200mmx with an 8mb V2, and  it's fine for
lapping solo(30+fps), and acceptable for racing in small fields with some
graphics shut off(20+fps), all at 800X600.  It still looks good, but you really
notice when the framerate falls below 30 or so.  Of all the driving sims I've
tried, GPL depends most highly on getting good framerates.  On the plus side,
3DFX cards are getting really cheap now.

I ran it for a few weeks on my P133/RenditionV1000, which was
pretty minimal.  It was possible.  It should be possible with your
config.  HOWEVER, a 3D card adds *a lot* to the performance -- whether
the graphics are fancy or not, its still a lot of pixels to be
pushing.  I'd pursue that option.

The way you word it, I don't know if you have the game or the PC
config in question, but you can download the demo version
(www.papy.com), which would be a good indicator.

Pick up a cheap Rendition card.  I found a "white box" version of the
Thriller 8MB AGP for only $92 at www.ic-direct.com.  It's the same as
the retail board except no video out, and no game software included.
You do get the manual, Herc. drivers CD, and warranty/registration card
though.  Works great with GPL.
