Problem with NR2

by Dave Cas » Tue, 27 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I just picked up Nascar Racing 2 at a computer show today and am having a
small problem with running it.  When I try to run it from the Win 95 screen it
goes through the opening show with music (which is cool, by the way).  Then
the title screen for Papyrus comes up.  Then I get a system error about how
the program could not gain control of COM 1 because it is being used by a
virtual device.  And that is all she wrote.  Kicks me out.

I went through the Boot Disk route like the readme file suggests and the
program runs just fine except, no sound.  I know the sound card is working and
such.  I guess I could live with it if I had to but, I would like to get the
thing running from the Win 95 screen.

Oh, by the way, I also have Cart Racing installed and it runs wonderfully
from the Win 95 screen.

So, if someone could take a stab at this one I would appreciate it.  If
possible please reply both here and through e-mail.  Sometimes I just don't
get all the news that's fit to print.  And watch out for the SPAM KILLER in
the e-mail address.

Thanks.

Dave

When you used the Boot Disk route, did you put your soundcard drivers in
the config.sys & autoexec.bat file?  You need these drivers to use them
in DOS.

Look in your Control Panel -> System Properties -> Device Manager and
see if you can find what is using your COM1 (or I/O 03F8-03FF & IRQ 4)
to see if it can be set to another setting.

Is this the Windows version or the DOS version?

What kind of a sound card do you have? What are your settings:
Address, IRQ, DMA?

Well, I ended up removing my mouse driver (Kensington Orbit) and going with
the generic Windoze driver and that took care of the virtual device.  Then
reinstalled the software and had some trouble getting the sound card to be
recognized but, got it going.

Now, the thing works fine but, only if I restart in DOS mode and run a small
batch file I wrote to load the mouse driver, the sound card and a couple of
other things.  Would be nice if it ran from the Windows screen but, I can live
with it.  At least its DOS screens are a damn sight better than the DOS
screens in CART Racing.  I'd stop playing CART altogether if I had to look at
those DOS screens.

Thanx.
