NR2 Asphalt textures?

Hi all,

Just wondering how many are running N2 with the asphalt textures on.
When I have them on it's a choppy day at the races.  I'm starting to
wonder if it's my system or something that many are encountering.  I'm
running N2 on a P-Pro 150, 32 edo ram, 2 megs video, Win95 (running N2
from DOS).  My video card is upgradable to 4 megs...If I make this
upgrade will it make a noticeable difference (improvements) in N2?

You'll get a huge improvement by running the game purely in DOS, rather
than launching it through win95.  To do this, uninstall the game via
win95.  Then choose start/shutdown/restart the computer in MS DOS mode.
Now reinstall the game in DOS.  To play the game, leave windows95 in
this manner, and start the game in DOS.  You'll pick up a huge
improvement in performance, though you'll need to do a win95 install if
you plan to race online.

God Bless,
Steve

I run it with FULL detail on.  I have a Hewlett Packard Pavillion p166
w/ 16 megs of RAM, 16x CDROM, and MMX.  Slow loading in DOS, but once
it is loaded it flies.

I am running the pavement texture and I don't see any noticeable
slowdown on my system.  I have a P-166 with 32 megs RAM and 1 meg
Stealth 64 video card.  I usually run in DOS as well, but I have run
in 95 without any difference in frame rate whatsoever.

Upgrading your video card to 4 megs will not make any difference at
all in the performance of your video.  The only thing that more memory
on your video card does is that it allows you to display more colors
at higher resolutions in Windows.  For example, if you have 2 meg
right now and you can display 256 colors at 1280x1024, upgrading to 4
meg may let you display 16 million colors at the same resolution (I
know these exact numbers are not right, but you get the point).  It
will do NOTHING for your video performance so don't waste your time
and money.

Yes. I run with everything on 32Mb EDO iP133 with Intergraph Reactor.
Smooth, virtually constant 30fps most tracks, Martinsville being the
notable exception.

Before changing to the Intergraph, same system delivered 22 (est.
average) fps runnning same detailwith an AOpen 2Mb EDO S3 765 (V+)
running univbe 5.3a or S3VBE20.

If N2 on your system is "choppy", (let's be quantitive here 8^)
running say less than 25fps with an iP6-150 and 2Mb (fast?) video,
then there is most likely some configural problem.

I'm runnin a HP 486 with a P83 upgrade, 56mb ram, 2mb video and
asphalt texture run ok.  I also ran N2 on HP Pavilion P166 and it
seemed to run ok also.

In my experience, the asphalt/grass texture feature drags down the fps more
than any other feature in the sim. Even more than car textures, horizon,
grandstands or any of them. The sim is impossible for me to run with the
texture on. I use a P90, with 32megs of ram, a Diamond Stealth video card
with 2megs. I also have the Univbe 5.3 installed.

Get a Rendition based card and you can run with all graphics on at most
tracks.
