GPL: GEM+ help please....

by Jan Verschuere » Mon, 18 Mar 2002 06:01:52

Hi,

As I've recently been forced into upgrading my PC (old one died), I now use
the Fast CPU Patch for GPL. I believe this necessitates me to use GEM+ to
change engines for FV racing (F2 chassis, F3 engine).

I've spent the past hour trying to get v1.4.1 of this utility to work. It
installs ok, and when I run it, it does locate GPL, plays a sound and scan a
bunch of .ini files... but that's it. I'm not presented with a user
interface, although the program stays in memory (have to kill it manually).
As this is a "***" machine, I tried installing all VB runtimes
distributions in order, but none releaved the problem. I get the impression
it flashes up an error message before it disappears, but it happens too
quickly for me to read.

As there's no system requirements/limits, nor contact info for the creator
included in the distribution I'm turning to RAS for some help. Any ideas?

Athlon XP2000+ on Asus A7V266-E, 512Mb PC2100 RAM, GF3Ti200 (desktop
1024x768x32), clean install of Win98se. GPL v1.2.0.2 UK w/ Fast CPU, D3D
patch and discofix applied, not using carsound patch. Any suggestions
appreciated.

Alternatively, if someone could mail me an FV patched UK GPL .exe conforming
to my description above, I'd be most gratefull (address= jan *dot*
verschueren *at* pandora *dot* be).

Thanks,

Jan.

Got the answer from a helpfull soul in my league :

Turns out I had numEvents in season67.ini set to 1 higher than number of
tracks installed. <sigh>

Sheesh.... how hard can it be to require for an error message to be "clicked
away" and to exit the program cleanly when a check like this fails?

Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate people spending their time writing these
utilities, but how about a little idiot proofing?

"Jan Verschueren" > Sheesh.... how hard can it be to require for an error
message to be "clicked
I have found the same type of problem with the SCGT utility Vedit.  I
started using Sean Staple's custom exe files for LMP(LeMans Prototypes) but
this makes a second patch folder and confuses Vedit.  It scrolls through a
list of error messages and then exits.  Rather than having the ability to
point the program to the proper folder it just tanks.  I have received
emails from the maker, hopefully he will be able to update the program.
