This from my _Grand Prix '88_ (p. 66, sidebar):
"When they told me Alain had overtaken Berger, I went faster for a few
laps," Senna would later say. Alarmed, Dennis had a word in the Frenchman's
ear [the famed Dennis-ian commitment to letting the drivers hash it
out??;) ], then called his other driver to inform him that Prost would not
be trying to attack. Only a few laps later, Senna's car bounced off the
guardrail on the inside of the right-hand Poitier corner and then smashed
into the barriers on the outsde of the corner.
. . . .
. . .it was a Brazilian whose call roused Senna. On first reflection, he
concluded that the accident had been entirey his fault, for heeding Dennis'
advice and slowing down. "It was my mistake," he said, "by going slow I
lost concentration."
Later that night, though, he changed his story. Examination of the car
revealed a flat rear tyre, and Senna knew that he had not touched the
barrier with the rear of the car. Together, he and Dennis concluded that
the accident had been caused by a puncture. "A couple of laps before, I had
a big slide in the *** Square," he said. The flat tyre explains that."
