The most important part of that incident was that it turned Ayrton into a
champion. He was trying to set fast lap, which was totally unnecessary,
so...  was the wreck. He recalled it as the lesson that matured his race day
will.

Now, let's see what Mika does with his....

Do you really, for one moment, think that he burst into tears because the
thought of how much he was being paid passed through his mind?  If so then
you really do not understand the human psyche, John.

Senna did the same, of course.

And if you really think Men shouldn't be able to cry or express motion, it's
you with the problem, not Mika.

Isn't it just a crying shame that sarcasm and satire are so difficult to get
accross on the Internet?
And, of course, the problem is compounded by the so-called "language
barrier".
(My first post was tongue-in-cheek, Mr. Z.)

That was what impressed me most about Prost, he "never" drove faster
than he had to to get the most out of a race, and if needed he could run
with the fastest of them, maybe not Senna when he was in one of his
"moods", but certainly everyone else, bit boring, but very
impressive...........

This from my _Grand Prix '88_ (p. 66, sidebar):

"When they told me Alain had overtaken Berger, I went faster for a few
laps," Senna would later say.  Alarmed, Dennis had a word in the Frenchman's
ear [the famed Dennis-ian commitment to letting the drivers hash it
out??;) ], then called his other driver to inform him that Prost would not
be trying to attack.  Only a few laps later, Senna's car bounced off the
guardrail on the inside of the right-hand Poitier corner and then smashed
into the barriers on the outsde of the corner.

. . . .

. . .it was a Brazilian whose call roused Senna.  On first reflection, he
concluded that the accident had been entirey his fault, for heeding Dennis'
advice and slowing down.  "It was my mistake," he said, "by going slow I
lost concentration."
Later that night, though, he changed his story.  Examination of the car
revealed a flat rear tyre, and Senna knew that he had not touched the
barrier with the rear of the car.  Together, he and Dennis concluded that
the accident had been caused by a puncture.  "A couple of laps before, I had
a big slide in the *** Square," he said.  The flat tyre explains that."

what to say?

I don't feel sorry for him. When hes well in front hes fine, but under
pressure he cracks both with driving
and emotions. \If hes well behind and can't win he drives thru the foeld and
doesn't chase in  case he can't pass Coulthard.
Too used toi being *** and can't take being seen to be not as ***
as he was. Couthard has gone thru the tough time and got out of it. Hakkinen
will be tense in the last few races and I expect this will show. What gets
me his is subtle negative comments about Coulthard. He should win the Champ
as Couthard has been told to let him win. So if haikkinen wins with Couthard
just behind him in all races, well we will never know if the best man won,
and so will Hakkinen and the F1 fans.

"Then, of course, Senna - more than 50 seconds ahead of Prost in the
race - drove into the barrier at the 40mph Portier corner with just 12
laps to go. It was the biggst mistake of his career and again showed
how big the name of Prost loomed in Senna's head. The Frenchman had
made a bad start and got stuck behind Gerhard Berger for 50-odd laps.
But despite the huge advantage Senna held over him, as soon as he got
free Prost set the fastest lap. So Senna did a quicker one two laps
later. Ron Dennis was on the radio shouting at him to slow down. Then
he didn't come round...."

From an interview with Jo Ramirez, McLaren's team coordinator.

Cheers!

Yes.
Prost was very much Fangio-like in this respect. The old maestro once said
that the art of winning races was to do it in the slowest possible time,
therefore increasing chances of staying on the road.
