F1RS wheelspin - realistic?

by Richard Mile » Thu, 27 Nov 1997 04:00:00

Does anyone else think that the amount of wheelspin you get in low gears in
F1RS is unrealistic.

I understand that stamping on the throttle in 1st and maybe 2nd will give
some wheelspin, but you have to be so careful with the throttle in 1st, 2nd
and 3rd or else the wheels spin like mad.

I find myself accelerating really carefully in low gears just to avoid
wheelspin. I would expect an F1 car to take a lot more throttle in low
gears....?

Maybe I just need to practice, it's certainly different from GP2 where you
can use full throttle as soon as you are out of 1st. (no traction control).

On the other hand maybe some work on setups will help. It certainly can't
make things worse than the standard setups.

Check the sensitivity of the gas and brake pedals. Before I played with
those,
my CH Pedals sent me flying everywhere. It's a lot better now...

Everything I've read about F1 suggests there is phenomonal amounts of
wheelspin with too much power applied - even in the high gears. I think
this is the closest yet to being realistic. Driving an F1 car should not be
easy. The honest journalists given the chance to try an F1 car are a
testament to this.

Try also adjusting the gears. A 1st gear of 18 is actually slower to
accelerate than using 22 or more, since I have to be sooo careful with
the throttle.

Actually I found that reducing the sensitivity of the throttle made
things worse, since the active part is compressed into a smaller
amount of throttle movement. I preferred to keep full throttle
sensitivity and play with the gears. Remember also that softening the
rear shocks will help the tyres to bite and get you away better.

Cheers!

Yes. If I'm pushing the gas-pedal in gear "N" I get a linear increase
of RPM from 0 (or whatever) to 16000. Going into 1st gear the limiter
is reached after 30% of pushing the gas-pedal.  Same in second gear.
Could this be realistic?

I dunno, but it's certainly very easy. I've found myself increasing
the lower gears to avoid spinning the rears, and coming out of corners
requires a careful foot. I tend to follow Senna's thinking on this,
and conclude that it's a good thing since it serves to separate people
out. Those who have the delicacy of control or setup will have an
advantage, and that's as it should be.

Still, whatever the reason you can cut some _awesome_ doughnuts :)

Cheers!
