PIII's are comming...

by DPHI » Sat, 27 Feb 1999 04:00:00

On yesterdays Screen Savers viewers poll on ZDTV, 99% of the people who
responded said they would not be upgrading. The whole ID function of the PIII
seems to have people spooked. I don't fully understand how this works, but it
all smacks of Big Brother to me. AMD K7's are going to be a huge hit if Intel
retains this function in the PIII.

My distributor sent me a fax saying they have them in stock TODAY
(2/26). Retail Price: 500MHz = $779; 450MHz = $569 BOXED.  Not worth it in
my oh-so-humble opinion.

I wasn't too worried till I heard that a German trade rag claims they've
figured out how to turn ON the serial number WITHOUT a reboot!  This is a
debacle just waiting to happen!

Buy the Celeron instead, it's faster, at the same clock speed, with current
games and sooo much cheaper... - http://www.tomshardware.com -

As soon as they get off the Big Brother BS, I might be interested.

Oh,and drop the price by about 70% so they are competitive.

:)

I'm a pretty tough customer:)

With the exception of Online Racing, I use a Mac G3 for everything.
That should explain why a Celeron doesn't impress me :)

And, though I think Apple's 2X faster claims are a bit, uh, out there,
the 450Mhz PII doesn't hold a candle either :)

Yes, it's a pitty Apple didn't allow clones of the Mac. It could of been an
interesting battle between Apple and Microsoft, and we, the customers, would
benefit so much more from it :o).
