Keyboard controls for Nascar 4?

I *vaguely* remember seeing something about this.  Doesn't N4 work with just
keyboard controls?  The reason I'm asking is that I wanted to load it as a
server at work.  Of course, I don't have a wheel or joystick connected to the
server.  :(
Also, if I run it as a server I won't be able to run it from home, right?  I
don't want to buy another CD just to run a server...

You can drive with keyboard fine, but there is a limit on customizations
to the keys and helps will be on.  Actually, if you connect a wheel
first then remove it the helps it seem stay off.

There is a separate EXE file for dedicated servers called "Launch
Dedicated Server" from the START menu.  It does not required a CD.

Jason.

Damn, that's too easy...  No, I don't need to drive from that system at all.  I
just wanted to run it as a server.  I'll try again tomorrow.  Thanks.

Well, it worked.  But, I didn't select to run 'ranked' races on all the tracks.
Now it won't give me the option to change it.  It just goes straight into the
launch screen.  I even tried renaming the app.ini and core.ini.  WTF?
<sigh>

Okay, I'll take you a step back.

1. You can read the readme file in the N4 main folder if you wish  :)

2. If you want to do some stuff like setting up which car the computer
will run, start N4 the normal method by using the CD and configure your
name, car and connection options like the number of drivers per TCP/IP
address.  Don't forget to enter a password/boss entry in the multiplayer
screen so your server can be controlled from home.

3. Shutdown N4.

3. To make the server rank races, you have to change the player.ini file
in the driver/myname/ folder (off the top of my head but it's in the
area where your setups are saved but up 1 folder).  Search for "rank" or
"10" in the file.  There are 4 entries with 0's that you need to change
to 1's for all races to be ranked.  It shouldn't be too hard to find
since you'll be in the right file now :)

4. Now relaunch N4 using the "Launch Dedicated Server" option.

Hope this is a bit clearer now :)

Jason.

I hope not :(  That's the last thing we need on Sierra...

The INI file you are looking for to make changes in after initially running
n4server is in the papy/N4/players/dedicated server/player.ini.  I think you
can change the ratings in there, I know thats where you go to change the
password (or command line switches, see the readme files) To change whether
or not you "register" your server with Sierra is in the Core.INI under
[server] Find the Sierra line and change the 1 to a 0. Helped our league
imensely before patch, stopped that incecsent pinging that was crashing our
races, haven't gone back to it since the patch (we dont care about rankings)
and prolly won't.

Hope some of this helps

I did that before I posted the message - I didn't see what I was looking for.
I must have just missed it...

Rats, I can't do this yet.  No joystick, it won't let me get past the config
screen...

Found the file, thanks.

You shouldn't need a joystick to just configure your dedicated server
player.  Just press "done" when the controller screen comes up.  I
wonder if you need a joystick port for it to work?  That *is* wierd.

It says something like, "all controls must be configured"...  My only option is
<back>.

Then try setting all the BOLD entries to a key.  If you have problems
assigning a key, try a keypad button.  It has to work.

Last time I tried was Monday, I think.  I didn't see this post until I got
home, and the system is at work.  Going from memory here...  Since there isn't
a joystick attached, the values keep jumping around.  It assigns whatever axis
jumps first.  But, it won't keep that as a value because the min/max 'spread'
isn't enough.  Whatever the issue was, I couldn't go forward, and I couldn't go
back far enough to abort the config.  I had to alt-tab, then kill N4 in the
task list.  Not very user-friendly, if you ask me... :(

I think I get it now.  When I start N4 without my TM-FF (USB) attached
it defaults to keyboard controls and I just press the DONE button.  The
calibration screen doesn't even show up.

You could try:

1. Remove the joystick from the Game Controls screen.
2. Removing/backup the player.ini file so it doesn't think you have a
joystick.
3. Just move the player/yourname folder to player/yourname.old

If you want to use it as a server, you can make up a new driver.

It sounds like step 3 should definately get you up and running.

Jason.
