I know I "suck" on street circuits. My best so far at Toronto is 58.063
in qualifying trim (actually my race setup, but with low fuel load of 13
gals). However, after I plugged in my AI data from my update last week
and went to race, I was getting dusted by the AI guys. Is it just my
imagination, or are they too quick at this track now? I had to lower the
RELS in the track.txt file to 94-95 (opposed to the 97 from the 1.02
patch). How is anyone else fairing at this track with the latest
x-file.txt?
Also how about fuel milage? I can't seem to make as many laps as the AI
are slotted for (33-35). Do I need to work on my gearing or drag?
Some driving tips from a not-so-hot-of-a-driver at Toronto:
Smooth is the key word. As a matter of fact VERY Smooth!
Set your car up to be responsive to movement of the wheel. You want to
have the car react quickly and settle down on the front wheels when you
move the wheel. Don't set the rear too stiff or you will lose it when
applying the power coming out of the tight turns. You might think that
since this track has alot of slow/tight corners that you don't need much
wing. Think again! You will certainly need downforce to speed through
the last 2 turns before the front straight. Also, you need enough wing
to help you brake. Too little wing and your braking distance will
suffer. Also you can use the wing to help you start your turning into
the slow/tight turns before the speed is reduced to the point of
negating the affect of the downforce. You want to get into and out
these turns as quickly as possible.
You might want a little negative stagger to help you get through the
curving straight going down Lakeshore Blvd.
It's always important to "drive ahead", but even more so at Toronto.
Way before you reach your braking points "visualize" braking at that
spot. Before you start braking, visualize your approach to the turn.
Before you start your turn, visualize your attack of the apex. Before
you make the apex, visualize your exit. As a matter of fact, start
visualizing these 1-2 steps earlier! This is how you will make it
around this track with speed and consistancy.
For the tight slow corners, "roll into the corner". Keep your foot
lightly on the brake as you turn sharply to the apex ("trail-braking").
Just as you get into the apex start applying the power while aiming the
car out of the apex. Apply as much power as you need to swing the rear
back under you. Once the rear is stable, smash it and aim for the next
braking point.
Even with the x-file.txt there are plenty of "weaknesses" in the AI.
Especially coming out of turn 5 and on to the approach to turn 7. Use
it, it maybe your only hope. ;-) (I think I need to take a look at
this and see if I can repair their logic in the *.lp files. Any other
major complaints of the AI at Torotono?)
