GP4 vs F1 2002

I have GP2 and GP3. To be honest I wasn't that impressed with the
improvements of GP3 over GP2, and I'm wondering if GP4 is significantly
better to justify buying it.
In particular, the main things that annoy me about GP3 are:-

1. It's almost impossible to correct the car when you're on the point of
   spinning.

2. The AI of other cars could be better. I've noticed that if you are not
100% on the pace going into a corner, the guy behind you will very often
punt you off the track. This just does not happen in a real race, the
following car either backs off, or takes a different line.

Is F1 2002 or GP4 better with regard to these problems?

No. but it is easyer to correct the car in F12002

GP4 has the same problem. When it's about to spin you'll not be able to
correct the car whatever you do. F12002 on the other hand gives you better
control of the car in this respect, but it also has a smaller margin for
mistakes you do during the race.

It's not been a big problem for me when playing GP4, I think the AI in GP4
are quite good and better than in F12002.

The things that are significantly better in GP4 than in the previous
versions are the graphics and the modelling of the tracks. The cars are not
that dynamic, and after a while they become a bit boring to drive.
F12002 might be a better choice in the long run as the cars are more
exciting to drive.

No. GP4 has even less improvement over its predecessor than GP3 did over
GP2. GP4 now sports animated pit crew and some fancy new graphics courtesy
of effects now supported by the new graphics cards. Geoff found that a lot
more important than to abolish the black flag penalty system (loss of engine
power for x seconds) to hell where it belongs, for example. In other words,
it's no more realistic, but looks neater (but not overwhelmingly so).

I find GP4 a lot easier to drive than GP3. I frequently get little slides
and the back end *** a bit, but it hardly ever causes me to lose it.
Having said that, there is of course a point where a spin is inevitable and
there's nothing you can do about it. I get the feel that point is still way
too early.

It's very nice that damage is modelled so unrealistically that *you* can do
it to them though, ey? ;) Anyways, I've not driven GP4 all that much yet,
but my general feeling is that they're better at avoiding crashes. If I feel
the line is mine, and I take it, I've yet to find myself smashing into an AI
car. This could just be down to luck though...

Can't comment on that. I've only played GP4 for a bit, and hardly touched
F1-2002 yet. Been too busy in Tribes2 lately.

I've managed to catch a spin maybe once or twice the whole time I played GP3.
Maybe this is realistic, but for us 'mortals' playing a sim, without the benefit
of car feedback, the tolerances could be a little more generous. It would be
nice
to know that the back end is stepping out more than 1 nano second before you get
into a full 180 degree spin.
Sounds like GP4 is better in this respect.

For what it is worth here are my thougths. I race GP3 and GPL offline
frequently. I just sat down for an evening of GP4 at my friends place and
in an upwelling I recently bought F1 2002 and been at it for a couple of
days. My system is a 900Mhz Athlon, 392 RAM, Geforce2 MX400, Microsoft
sidewinder FF. These are my findings :

GP3 vs GP4 :
============
apart from some smooth graphical stuff there are almost no changes that
would justify switching from GP3 to GP4, but hey, that's just my personal
opinion. I might just buy it for the sake of owning it.. As it is pointed
out here by several people AI will bump you off in corners, race you
happily even if they are on a slowdown lap and car recovery is
non-existent. Furthermore they againmade the mistake to base the sim on
the previous season so you immediately get outdated cars and tracks.

GP vs F1 2002 :
===============
I really like the***pit view and***pit graphics in GP3/4. They are to my
liking disappointing in F1 2002. Maybe because I never had Playstation
before..?

The F1 game takes a lot longer to load on my system than the GP games but
maybe that's just on my system although I find that track graphics are a
little heavy in F1

In F1 I regularly get som "glitches" where the system seems to hamper for
just that split second and than catches on again, I never had that in GP

In car sound is still bearable in F1 but hear the cars pass by in TV view
and everybody who has ever been trackside at a Grand Prix knows that this
has nothing to do with the real thing. I still get these annoying
tinkling bell sounds that seem to be typical for playstation ported
games. But I am sure that somewhere out there exists a sound editor for
F1 2002 (can some-one point me to an URL to edit F1 2002??)

but...

FF effects are that much better in F1 2002, really...GP3/4 gives you the
sensation that a giant spring is just returning the wheel in corners but
with F1 you get that precise feeling, you can almost feel the road going
by underneath you. Just hit a curb and you feel the rumble, great!!
Furthermore the controls are that much more adjustable in F1 than in GP.

Car setup is more extensive in F1, maybe that is just important to
techhead simmers or bad drivers like me but I can make up a lot of time
by tuning my setup. Where is camber in GP3? weight distribution, in car
adjustable brake balance??

My ideal game?
the feel and car control of F1 2002 with the in-car graphics and***pit
of GP3/4, the simple engineering and the adjustability of Grand Prix Legends

There's a thought..

F1 2002 has individual***pits for each car similar to the design of the
real ones, GP4 has 'a' generic***pit identical to that of GP3 and not much
like any real F1***pits.

I used to get that as well, if you increase the Maximum Effects in the sound
section of you plr file that will fix it.

What??? F1 2002 is a from the ground up PC game, EA's PS2/Xbox offerings
were developed by totally different people and have not one byte of code in
common with F1 2001/2.

Legends

I'd agree with you there, apart from the***pit.

I will probably have to agree here but on the other hand, I have never sta
down in a modern F1***pit. I keep having the impression that the F1 2002
***pits are too "round" and that the wheels are too close together

OK I'll look into that, thanks.
Guess I got it all mixed up here. Well, could it be that I am a little
prejudiced when it comes to EA Sport - games? My apologies..

Still, I am beginning to like the game, now, that's a good sign isn't it?

Strange, I find the***pits look great in F12002.  They were terrible in
F12001.  You *will* need to have the graphics options turned right up to see
the***pits at their best.  In GP4, changing graphics detail has no effect
on the look of the***pit.
