GPL AVI on GameSpot

Papyrus has released a pre-alpha AVI of Grand Prix Legends which is
available on GameSpot at http://www.racesimcentral.net/

There has been a lot of good discussion on r.a.s. recently concerning
physics and realism in racing simulations.  It is clear that there are
folks on the newsgroup who are knowledgable about what makes a sim
great.

With that in mind, we decided to release the GPL AVI to show people
how the development of the project is coming along, and what Papyrus
is aiming for.  We hope to release further AVIs as the development of
the project continues so everyone is kept a*** of where the project
stands.

In this AVI, Dave Kaemmer (Papyrus' principle engineer) and Matt
Sentell (GPL Producer) race each other around one lap of Monza. The
AVI should pretty much speak for itself, but one interesting aspect is
the two different driving styles of Dave and Matt.  Although they both
do comparable lap times, Matt (in the second car) is very smooth and
steady throughout the couse. Dave, on the other hand, is really
tossing the car around, mostly just because he can.  Neither style
seems to be faster, although Dave's showboating ultimately results in
his demise, as you will see at the end of the AVI.

If anyone has any questions about GPL after viewing the AVI, I will do
my best to answer them. Matt and Dave themselves are pretty busy
getting the work done, (when they aren't racing GPL, that is) and they
asked that I follow up with the AVI on their behalf.

Oh man, why doesn't GameSpot use FTP?  HTTP absolutely blows for
downloading files...

I just saw the AVI and it looks absolutelly amazing. I have never seen
"car dynamics" like this. I must say all the other sims fade in comparison to
what you see in the AVI. Holding 4-wheel drifts and powerslides through
corners.
Anyone, who even compares this to anything that is out there at the momennt
obviously hasn't seen this AVI or doesn't have a clue about car dynamics.
This is a must see for all you sim junkies out there!!

I downloaded the AVI, and all I can say is: GREAT STUFF!!!! Wow, I am sure
now everyone will start complaining that the game is still not released,
but take your time, and make this the best sim ever!

Thanx,

Damn! They already removed the AVI (1997.11.27). I was not able to download
it yesterday, it was always canceling my download (why didn't they use
FTP????).

Does anyone know where I can get that AVI?

Thank you!

I downloaded the .avi w/o any problems from the site mentioned above.
Having just bought a state-of-the-art 56K modem, I went for the
"bigger version" though... 50 mins at 4.3KB/s.

For those of you who have seen the video, doesn't Dave Kaemmer's
excursion into the gravel at the end look a bit strange? To me, it
appears as if he's almost coming to a stop, and then applies throttle
to deliberately turn. Or am I mistaken?

The cars (or should I say _the car_? Seems like Jim Clark is racing
Jim Clark in his #5 Lotus) look marvelous. The rounded cigar-shape is
very accurate, and there are many, many polygons in the rear
suspension. Actually, I'm glad this sim won't be out until next summer
- more time to save for major hardware upgrades... ;)

Remember !! GameCenter.com (I think) said that with a Pentium 90 you could
have 30fps in GPL ! ;-)

heh yeah it is possible.  In VGA and with a 8meg 3D accelerator card ;-)
(joking!).

Seriously, I am not able to download the video me neither. The link for the
videos found here :
http://headline.gamespot.com/news/97_11/26_grandprix/index.html  show us
nothing. We can't access to the zip files of the videos. Why ??

Thanks a lot for the AVI Mike, very interesting to see where the
project is at the moment.

It's incredibly difficult to draw any conclusions from the AVIs, since
all they can really show is the graphics and sound, both obviously far
from the finished article. The driving looks very nice (perhaps a bit
too slidy?), but impossible to evaluate without actually driving the
car, since I could do slides like this in GP2 by turning off all help
except opposite lock ;) (Okay, the car didn't drift like that, only
exit oversteer, but you catch my "drift" - you need to drive it to
know).

Sound seems a bit wierd, is that the final one? Perhaps it's just the
quality of the AVI but it doesn't sound like a 60's F1 car should
(unless that sound is just put in from another product to get the game
working?).

Thanks again for the AVI, and hopefully you can give us some regular
snippets on how things are progressing :)

Cheers!
John

Hi Martin,

I have both, so if you require them I'll stick them onto my FTP site
and post the address here for everyone. Let me know if you still
require that.

One thing that does bother me about the movie is the sound.. Sounds a bit like N2, I hope this won't be the "final" sound in the sim.

take care
