First off thanks for understanding that I was actually being
complimentary to him with my "gonzo" reference. I wasn't sure how many
people would actually recognize it, but I thought the original author
might. But at the risk of sounding like an over correcting teacher from
5th grade, let me clarify a few things up.

The term "gonzo journalism" did in fact originate with the good Dr.
himself, as being the only "true" way to describe his writing style. Not
exactly sure if he himself coined the term, or if others did trying to
"categorize" his work. And not only did he do work *** for mags
such as Rolling Stone like you mention, he also has a handful of
extremely worthwhile books.

"Hell's Angels"--in which he writes about the inner world of the world's
most notorious motorcycle gang during their hays days of the sixties.
"Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72"--In which he follows
presidential candidate George McGovern around during his battle against
Richard Nixon in the 1972 presidential campaign.
"Better than Sex"--in which he follows the 1992 Presidential Campaign
between Clinton, and Bush.
"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"--probably his best known work, and
probably one of the best literary works(IMHO) of the latter half of the
century.
"The Great White Shark Hunt-- have yet to make my way to this one, so I
can give no description, but I'm sure it's worth reading. His works
always are.

Plus others I'm sure I'm missing but can't think of currently.

You are semi correct in 2 ways here. A movie WAS made based on the book
"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", but starred Johnny Depp and not Bill
Murray as Dr. Thompson's "alter ego" Raoul Duke. A fantastic performance
by mr. Depp in his portrayal of Thompson/Duke. The movie was also
directed by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame. Bill Murray DID star in
a movie about Dr. Thompson, but it was called "Where the Buffalo Roam".
Another fine work indeed, and both are worth watching. I do suggest
though that if your new to Dr. Thompson, you rent "Fear and Loathing in
Las Vegas" because it is a side splitting funny ride through life in the
desert paradise know as Las Vegas, with some fantastic literary work
along the way.

Agreed, keep it coming and never let people close the door of creativity
on you because of the words you choose.

: There I was dressed in me racing gear (pyjama's and tellytubby slippers -
: don't ask!!), talcum powder on me stots - for serious racing, you've just
: got to mek sure your knackers aren't ganna get sweaty and schtick to and
: pull your short and curlies - ooh ouch!!

Argh.  I just finished Irvine Welsh's "Filth".  I thought I had read the
last reference to sweaty shorts for at least a few weeks.  No such luck...

It must be a British thing.

: Don't get me wrong, I consider myself an ok pilot able to hold me own
: amongst the also-rans (I'm no bragger - unlike some of you saps..:-)) but
: there are times when this shlockware yanks my well endowed chain something
: cronic.

Make up your mind.  First you say you enjoy the posts where others toot
their own horn, and now you call them braggers.  (yes, I see your smiley)

: AND don't tell me you've never given your telly the verbal diahorrea when
: you've gone head-first into the - delete as applicable, tree, fence, drink
: or mown down the whole Mr and Mrs Cardboard clan.

Most of us refrain from spilling our "verbal diahorrea" all over the
USENET.  Hey, I enjoy a good "race story" as much as anyone else, and your
original post had a point.  However, if every GPL driver came onto this
newsgroup to moan and complain about every race they have thrown away due
to a driver error... well, there just isn't enough bandwidth, is there?
40,000 GPL copies sold x 2 hours of driving per day x 3 errors per hour...

: If anyone's offended by what I've got ter spout........
: *** off.

A not entirely unsurprising comment.

OK Stephen and anyone else "offended" by idav's colourful language:
Either learn how to use a killfile, or use that "next post" key.  I
think idave's posts are a welcome change from all the tired old
posturing that usually goes on in here.

I didn't say I was offended... merely pointing out the obvious.  Actually
I like the idea of colourful race results, but I did express the opinion
that if we all posted such a report *every* time we made a mistke in GPL,
well, there wouldn't be enough time in the day to read all the posts :)

This ***y things gotten oota hand.....

First off Steve, you've just stuck a sharp'n right through the old
ticker......!!!!!!!!!!!

A***ney.......!!!!!!!!

You think I'm a***ney.....?

You have no idea how big an insult that is bonny lad........:-)

Lets just say, I'm as far to the NE as an Englishman can be and who knows
probably got a bit of viking, norse and Scots barbarian *** in me veins.

Anyway....

When I first posted a message here it was simply for a bit of a laugh to see
who would come back at it.

But this has gotten a bit doolaly......expected only a couple.....

If I've offended anyone, or knocked a nose out of kilter.......I APOLOGIZE.

I agree that if everyone posted a GPL horror story this place would become
one long winge..but well, you know I fancied my chances with you ***
speedsters - I've sat here many a time reading your posts on how you're like
shit off a stick around Monza and can do it in such and such a time which
makes my own efforts (why are ye so slooooooooow dad!!!) look like I was
drivin a milk float.

I'm like "where the hell did he/she find 5 ***y seconds......!!!"....and I
guess a few other noodle doodles are muttering the same tune around the
world.

So fellas don't be to *** me when I come on with a pained post, have a
little sympathy for a grown man whose been reduced to tears by GP ***y L.

I know some of yea think I'm a brick short of a skyscraper, that "that
stupid English pillock" talks a load of hooey - even the wife says I type a
load of complete gobshite bollox,

"They probably think you're a right dimwit....." she moans.

Many's the time I've been wrestlin' with me wheel as she's walked past tut
tutting as I stick me pride and joy over the swaney (er...water).

Still, its only a game.....................right.?
