Help: GPL doesn't store laps at Nuerburgring?!?!

by Bert Hilberin » Wed, 21 Feb 2001 13:31:15

An hour ago I had the feeling I could finally attack the Nuerburgring and
improve on my previous best lap in a Cooper; at 12:38 that didn't seem too
difficult. Selected my trusty Eagle, took a deep breath, and after a crashy
warm-up lap I managed a first lap with less than 10 spins and even a second
with 'only' 3. A quick glance at my watch showed me that this was around
10:00, so a nice improvement.

Horror of horrors, when I passed the pits it showed nothing, and when I
stopped and look at the list with laptimes it showed twice 'XXX'. Luckily my
neighbours aren't home, otherwise... :-((((

No idea what happened; it recorded that awfully slow lap in the Cooper
alright. Two things come to mind:
(1)    I've had this before (my previous install of GPL, *before* my
previous HD crashed. Only on the Nuerburgring.
(2)    I've install 'Ringtrainer', so that I don't have to drive a warm-up
lap of 15 minutes...

Can anybody help me? I just lost a possible improvement of about 150 on
GPLRank, so I've had better times...

Thanks in advance,

Bert

A number of us have run into the same thing in league racing.  We've come to
the conclusion that if you're off the pavement in certain areas or for
certain distances, even if it doesn't DQ you it will not count your lap.  I
agree, 10 minutes is a long time to find out .... nothing :(

There are some turns at the 'Ring where you are _not_ allowed to shortcut
across the grass. Shortcut in this case means not keeping at least two
wheels on the track. The righthander at the end of Adenauer Forst is one
of these turns, but there are three or four others.

Don,

Thanks for the suggestion. The silly thing is that on my 12:38 lap (no, I
wasn't reading or watching TV...:-)) I was off track much more than on my
'relatively clean' laps with the Eagle.

Maybe it's the 'off the pavement in certain areas'; any idea where that
would be?

Thanks,

Bert

  yes putting off wheels at certain corners will dq the lap.
If you have the trackside detail slider set high enough, you 'should' see
three signs at the ring with a red x against a black circle... those are the
areas
you must stay on track.

Hi!

First of all: Ringtrainer has nothing to do with this. *g*
There are four sections along the Ring that you must not shortcut -
otherwise the lap won't be counted. These sections are defined in the
"track.ini"-file:

*snip*

[ configuration_0 ]
  ; Format: dlong, start dlat, end dlat, time penalty (sec), 0 (required)
  ; 3 checkpoint minimum
checkpoint_0 = 2037.0  -14.0   7.5  5.0 0; prevents cutting Nordkehre II
checkpoint_1 = 2763.3  -14.7   7.0  5.0 0; prevents cutting Hatzenbach II
checkpoint_2 = 3138.0  -14.3   6.5  5.0 0; prevents cutting Hocheichen
checkpoint_3 = 7069.5   -9.0  11.0 10.0 0; prevents cutting Adenauer Forst

*/snip*

The numbers define checkpoints where your car has to be within certain
"poles" of an invisible gate across the track. The position of this gate is
defined by the first number (longitudinal distance from the s/f-line in
meters) and the poles are defined by the following two numbers (lateral
distance in meters from the track's centerline). If you're missing this gate
because you left the grey stuff and are driving on the green, then GPL won't
count the lap. In a race, you would get a time penalty of X seconds, where X
is defined by the fourth number.

So, to make sure that every lap is counted, simply stay on the asphalt and
everything will be fine ;)). Use Ringtrainer to know the enemy and soon you
will find yourself within the below-9-club ;)).

Joachim, Dave, Don, Ville,

I tried again, drove very carefully (i.e.: left the track only 6 times and
spun only once), fell almost asleep and managed an 11:05 lap in the Eagle.
Indeed nothing to do with the installation, neither with the Ringtrainer
(which I like quite a lot actually!), just my driving.

Thanks to you all for the information! Tomorrow I'll go for a sub 10:00
lap...:-)))

Regards,

Bert

Re-install the track from the CD and do NOT use ringtrainer.

I think one of the others is the nordkehre.

I put the detail slider to high and, yes, I see them now. Helps enormously
when you're watching out...:-))

I didn't have the details 'that high', because I only have a 233MMX. And of
course, that's the only reason I'm this slow...:-))))

Bert

Why?  Running with RingTrainer isn't causing his discounted times - going off
the track is...

Absolutely true. I was (am...:-) the guy that went off the track at 'the
wrong places'. Since I turned the resolution to 'high', at least I can see
the places where GPL checks whether I have at least 2 tyres on the track...

I'm still using RingTrainer. Very nice tool, and I need it! :-))
