vga/svga to tv or scan converters

I've been thinking that playing GP2 or other racing sims on my 27 inch
television screen, with the sound card connected to my stereo system must
be quite an experience. However some store clerks where they sell vga to
tv converters or scan converters say that these units are really not
very good. I'm actually surprised that with all the action in this group
this topic ( re: hardware , video cards, etc. ) hasn't come up lately.

Matrox is just releasing a new 3D card, Mystique, and will release soon
a daughter card for it that will do video in/out.
Anybody out there with suggestions, experience or whatever ?
Will those new 3D card on the market make GP2 look better / faster ?
If you have a Diamond Stealth 3000 series card, do you need to load a
VESA / Univbe type driver to play these sims, or does it work just as
well without one loaded ?
So anybody out there using vga to tv converters ?
