Opinions on VGA-to-TV scan converters??

by Jimbo » Wed, 27 Sep 1995 04:00:00

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has tried one of those things.
I know there's a couple of them available.  Most of them
say 640x480, and I wasn't sure if they would work with
NASCAR 320x200 mode?  And what would the quality
be like?  Any comments?

Also, and this is a slight tangent from the topic, but could
anyone recommend a good, but reasonably priced video
card for running games such as NASCAR?  My main
computer is a workstation, and I don't know much about
PCs, but I've heard that some cards perform better under
DOS and some are good for windows but not really great
with DOS.  I know there are a lot of neat new cards, but I would
like to stay in the ~200 range.  Is it even possible to get
a decent card for this price?  I guess what I'm asking is,
if you had about 200 bucks to get as good of a video card
as you could, for the sole purpose of running NASCAR
(pathetic as that sounds!! :-), what would it be?

One final question relating to running NASCAR - is there
any performance disadvantage to going with an AMD or
Cyrix 486 instead of Intel?

Thanks for any help,
Jim

As for your question about video cards, one avoid Reveal; something with a
port address conflicts with sound cards, and causes you to see white dots
on the screen.  Right now I'm in the process of building a computer for my
room and found a Diamond Stealth 64 w/ 2 megs DRAM for $199.97.  If you
want values, look inthis big catalouge called The Computer Shopper.  This
thing weighs about 5 pounds, but is well worth it.  It has adds for every
thing from 220 mHz Penium systems with 128 megs RAM, to mouse pads, and
everything is priced very reasonably.
