I have recently purchased a 9700 pro allowing me to obtain much higher
resolutions in my games. When increasing resolution the actual whole picture
size decreases. Is it ok to adjust the monitor to fill the screen or will
this take the game out of proportion?

To go straight to the point - the answer to your question is; yes.

It depends on the game and the resolution you're using. For example, if
you're running a game at 1600x1200, it's probably safe to increase the
screen size. The normal aspect ratio is 4:3.  If you're running it in
1600x900, it should probably have black borders on the top and bottom.
That's a wide-screen ratio (16:9). Have a look at the speedometer or some
other object you know to be round and adjust the height of the screen so the
object actually appears round. Other games already compensate for various
resolutions, so no adjustment is needed. Again, just check round objects
make sure they look correct.

The reason for the visable area change is the screen refresh rate changed.
If you kept the same refresh rate the screen size wouldn't change.  As for
adjustment go with  GTXxx's method to get things back were the should be.

Did he mention if he's running a LCD flat-screen?  Most of THEM seem to work
best at their "native" rez (usually 1024x768).
