Guys,

My PCs getting flakey, so I'm going to re-format and rebuild.

Can I do this...

Dump the entire GPL directory onto a CD.
Wipe the HDD and rebuild the system.
Install GPL from the GPL CD.
Copy GPL directory from CD over new installation.

Or will I need to install patches, etc, then overwrite from the cd?

Yes, just install GPL then copy over it with your one off your CD.

One thing to keep in mind is when you copy over the files they are going to
be read-only. Need to change permissions.

Actually there's no need to install GPL. Just copy your GPL directory from
the CD, and possibly create a shortcut to the desktop for it. To avoid all
files being marked as read only you could pack (zip/rar/ace) the GPL
directory before putting it on CD (this is what I do, partly because it
wouldn't fit on a CD without the packing). Just make sure that the packed
file includes the directory structure.

I just did this myself.  Loaded GPL from GPL cd first, then copied over from
CD-RW my saved GPL files.  Worked just fine.  However, all files on the HD are
not read-only they all are archive.  Does it make a difference if a CD-R rather
than a CD-RW is used for the back up?
