NCR2 patch for 3Dfx?

NCR2 patch for 3Dfx?

by Michael Dome » Mon, 07 Jul 1997 04:00:00

I'm on the fence as to which 3D card to buy.

I'll get a Rendition if that is the only way to run accelerated NCR2 and
ICR2, even though it is widely belived to be inferior to the 3Dfx cards.

My question is: What are the odds that Sierra will eventually come out with
a 3Dfx patch for these sims to match thier upcomming 3Dfx support of GP
legends?

How likely is this possibility?  If it's "no chance" I'll just get the
Rendition and figure out what to do about every other sim in the world
later.

Thanks for the info.

I'd put my money on 'no chance'.  Remember the next generation Rendition
cards should be out this winter and future Papyrus sims should support the
3Dfx cards.  You may be better off getting the a 3Dfx card now or waiting
on the Rendition V2200 cards.  Of course if you can't wait and really want
3D accelerated N2, then a Rendition card is your only choice.  If you have
the cash, you could always add a Monster3D or Righteous3D to site along
side the Rendition card and you'd have the best of both worlds.

It's not hard at all, just plug it in and install the drivers.  3Dfx-native
and Direct3D games will use the Monster3D while Rendition games will still
use your Intense3D.

I posted a similar question aimed at Papyrus asking if they
were going to look at MMX technology for their future sims.
Although the person who gave an answer did not say
specifically that they worked at Papyrus the answer was
something along the lines that MMX would not help their type
of sim a hell of a lot.  He or She mention that some of the
folks here (as in their office) were for 3DFX and others were
for OpenGL. At the moment their had not been any confirmation
as to which way they will go.

Sorry I can't give a better answer but the sender did not have
a signature.

NCR2 patch for 3Dfx?

Quoting the faq section at the diamond site  " If the game uses d3d, here's
how it works: 1. The game tells the d3d api what 3d features that it needs
to run ( without knowing what cards are in the system if any ). 2. D3d
finds what cards are in the system and the capabilities of each ( speed,
features etc ). It then works like a dating service matching up the card
that will meet the most needs of the program. This usually means the
Monster3d will then be used to do all of the special 3d features that it
comes with. "  As I'm picking up a m3d tomorrow to slot in beside my
3dblaster, I find this topic very interesting indeed. However, I'm still
confused as to what is actually happening while running a d3d program with
two 3d cards that both support d3d. Is it using both cards as it suggests
above, or is Eric's theory closer to the mark ?

Dont look back, they may be gaining on you.

I've just bought a Righteous 3D (same chipset as monster) to go with my
3D Blaster PCI.  It's fabulous.  Installation is a cinch:
Plug in the new card, attach pass-thru cable, install drivers and you're
done.  You won't regret it.  MASSIVE performance increases for D3D (and
native stuff like Tomb Raider) but you've still got Rendition for ICR2
and N2.  Marvellous.
Did you try D3D demo of Wipeout XL?
Try it before you install your 3Dfx (use 640x480), then try it with your
new card.  -That's- an example of real power.

I've had no conflicts at all.  Native Rendition uses 3D Blaster,
Native Voodoo and D3D use Righteous.  No conflicts, no tweaking.
Plug, play, and no pray.

Sorry about the evangelising but I'm impressed, as you can probably
tell :)
