My DirectX installation seems to be severely messed up, but reinstalling it
has not solved the problem.  I'm hoping that someone might have a suggestion
(well, short of throwing this computer out the window, which I've already
come up with on my own.)

To sum up the problem, some of my DirectPlay files and/or registry entries
are messed up, and that is rendering  certain games that rely upon
DirectPlay (motocross madness 2, for instance), unplayable in multiplayer
mode.  GPL, on the other hand, and some other racing games I have, seem to
work fine online.

When I run Dxdiag and generate the text file report, I receive these ominous
messages:

-----------------------------------------------------
Network Tab:
The registry information for the service provider 'Internet TCP/IP
Connection For DirectPlay' is missing or damaged.  You should reinstall
DirectX.
The registry information for the service provider 'IPX Connection For
DirectPlay' is missing or damaged.  You should reinstall DirectX.
The registry information for the service provider 'Modem Connection For
DirectPlay' is missing or damaged.  You should reinstall DirectX.
The registry information for the service provider 'Serial Connection For
DirectPlay' is missing or damaged.  You should reinstall DirectX.

-------------------------------------------------------

I am running Windows ME (Japanese version) and DX 8.0... reinstalling
DirectX does not eliminate the problem, nor did uninstalling DX (using some
of the 3rd party removal applications floating around out there) and
replacing it with DX8.1 or a fresh install of DX8.0.

Short of a reformat and reinstallation of Windows... might there be a way to
salvage this?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Itazura

Have you tried searching for, and removing, any references to DirectX in
your registry?  If not, be sure to back it up first.

Before trying to reformat/reinstall, try running a 'fix' install of
the OS over the existing installation.  It may not work, but you lose
nothing if you're resigned to nreinstalling anyway :-)

Whatever happens, make sure you backup all your game saves etc before
starting.

If you're running Millennium, are you running System Restore?  If so, go back to a point prior to your problems.

Look for a program called "dxbuster."  Its freeware that does a
complete uninstall of DirectX.  Run this before installing whatever
version of DirectX you're trying to install.
