GPL: Too many mods? (won't start)

by JoHS » Wed, 17 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Recently a weird error has occured: When I try to launch GPL with no
Dial-up connection alive, GPL won't start, but generates a dialogbox:
GPL caused an invalid page fault in
module GPL.EXE at 015f:004b09e8

If I dial up my online-connection, everything works as it should. At
first I thought: Maybe I should leave GPL in a Traing or Single race
"state" and not the Multiplayer state I normally quits from (GPL
remember what state it was running in last time...). This had no effect
in my situation. I can leave in whatever state I want, and it simply
don't start offline. Does VROC alter anything to the GPL .exe?
I have also tried to remove my nic to try to solve the problem with two
network devices using each tcp/ip setup with no help.
Any ideas are very welcome, as I have to pay my own phonebill :-)
Thanks in advance,
JoHS, Norway

I just have to add the following:
I tried a clean reinstall of Gpl to another drive, and the same error
occurs, so I can't blame the modifications done to gpl.exe. And what's
more frustrating, Gpl will only start _once_ after I have connected to
internet. After that the same error message appears...

I need "just one fix" here. Ideas still very welcome, and yes I have
reinstalled Voodoo2 ref. drivers and latest dx61 release with no effect.

Are you using a core.ini that contains the following?

[ Communications ]
alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1

If so, remove the alternate_ip_addr_lookup line.  If your only TCP/IP
connection is made using normal Windows Dialup Networking, this
core.ini setting is not necessary and, as the readme.txt says, can
cause problems.

If you're not using this setting, or if removing it doesn't help, you
can disable GPL's networking capability by putting the following two
lines in a plain text file named core.ini in GPL's home directory

[ Communications ]
disable_network = 1

(or, if you use IPX on a LAN, you can try disable_tcp_ip = 1, instead.
IPX will still be available).  When you do want to play GPL on-line,
though, you'll need to comment out the second line.  Just put a
semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line.  And, be sure to connect to
the Internet before running the game.

This won't affect anything.

No, it does not.

Thanks alot,
In my "old" installation of gpl I'm using the alternate_ip_addr_lookup
method, because I have a rather complex situation here (I'm using
internal ISDN thru Dial-up adapter to internet for VROC and ICQ to work
flawlessly, but also have an external Cisco ISDN Router running DHCP on
my lan for my racingbuddies to call directly into (0.111LAT)).
But as I said in my own reply to this tred, I have done a clean
installation of gpl also, and the same problem still occur there(no
alternat_ip---). Now, I have to try to disable the network as you say to
solve this problem. I also said that I'm very unsure what caused this
error at first, but the only thing I can remember altered in my system
the last 14 days is an upgrade of Netscape, from Comm. 4.5 to 4.51.

Is it possible to "pass" different core.ini-files to GPL.EXE so we could
have different network-configs at the same time?

Thanks again, I'll try to report back whatever happens, you deserve it
all.
