I start GPL, select my options, hit the green flag to start the race,
then strange noises start like sputtering and engine whines then
nothing, dead. I blame Cyrix.

As far as I am aware this method is still in use, albeit with some
modernisation, no doubt! :o)

[ Graphic Options ]
lastRasterizerDLL = rast3dfx.dll ; Last rasterizer DLL used
[ Driving Resolution ]
height = 768 ; Resolution height of the driving
screen
width = 1024 ; Resolution width of the driving
screen
Substitute rast3dfx.dll (for 3dfx) with renddll.dll or softdll.dll as
appropriate (for rendition or software)
Enter resolution as appropriate (e.g. 480x640)
8. Make c:\gpl\program\options.ini read only.
9. Start the game.
Well, you CAN blame Cyrix but it probably was Win98. I can get GPL to run
in Win98 SOMETIMES. About 50% of the time it crashes horribly, sometimes
locking up keyboards, mice etc. It is a shame because it looks like the
best racing/driving sim to have EVER been created. I also have problems
with what looks like sound card/controller/system timings. Sometimes I
can run it (when it works at all) and it is smooth as glass but sometimes
the frame rate is very bad, while the sound remains good, and the
controllers cease to function. I basically have to reboot when this
happens. All Windows functions are very slow (jerky) after I exit GPL
after this happens. Any thoughts?
Frustrated,

I haven't tried it.

You also have to manually create the C:\gpl\program\replay folder to be able
to save your replays.
