GPL won't start any more:-(

by Some Call Me Ti » Sat, 02 Nov 2002 20:00:21

Boo Hoo:-( I'm most pissed off as GPL has decided to stop working all of a
sudden.
Start it up and you just get the screen with the gpl logo and then it drops
back to the desktop. I've seen this problem before but it's so long ago I
just can't remeber what fixed it.
The odd thing is that it is happening on all four of my pc's, both with
win2k and xp. The only thing I can think of that has changed since GPL last
worked is that I've re-built my domain contoller and I've updated to later
nvidia detonators (41.03) plus the usual ms patches. I've even tried a fresh
install of GPL and it does the same.

Can you help me out guys as I'm geting an itchy right foot.

I had the same prob...

Try turning on the Indexing Service for the hard drive that GPL is on
- worked for me :)

Right click Hard Drive > Properties > turn on 'Allow Indexing Service
To Index This Disk'

Hope it works

Just tried that and unfortunately it didn't work and logiaclly I can't see
how it could. I've never run indexing before and neither should you as it's
real resource hog. You only really ned to run it on a file server's data
disk.

Thanks

Allowing indexing on the gpl folder is not the same as enabling it. From
what others have posted here recently, you should be able to allow indexing
on the gpl folder without having to actually switch it on. Do a google
search on this group & you'll find loads of comments on this common problem.
Hope you get it working ;-)

Although the service has never been running, the disk has always been set to
allow indexing. I've tried taking it off and putting it back on again but to
no avail. Besides it's happening on not one but all of pc pcs. I'm going to
try reverting to earlier detonators as thats one on the few things that have
changed since I last has GPL going.

Thanks

Ah ha!

I've found the answer! It's nothing do do with indexing or even graphics
drivers. It was in fact file compression. Some time last month I'd gone
through several games and compressed the folders wasting the most space and
I'd compressed GPL's Player, Car and tracks folders to save quite abit of
space (300Mb out of 1Gb in fact). I uncompressed them and hey presto. This
was also the problem on my other PC's too.

It's quite strange that GPL doesn't like this as I've compressed quite a few
games and they all work fine except GPL.

Anyway I'm a happy bunny again now so I must go and put my foot down

Could you tell me how to do that in XP?  I'm running out of space.  Thanks

No problem John it's quite easy. Hopefully you're running XP Pro not the
Dreaded Home edition which does not use NTFS and therefore file/folder
compression.

Simply Right click on the file/folder you want to compress and click
properties. On the first general tab click the advanced box then tick the box
compress contents to save space. Click ok then apply and tick radio button
apply changes to this folder and subfolders and hay presto.

It's best to use something like treesize pro to see which files are wasting
the most space, it's not much point compressing compressed files like jpgs,
zips quake base files etc.

Not not in the version sold in the UK it doesn't. You might be able to read
an already formated disk but you certainly can't create and NTFS partition.

When I build a new computer to a customer and setup WinXP for the first
time it defaults to using NTFS on the partition it creates

Damn, I'm pretty sure my disk is fat32, I don't see that option at all :-(

Sorry your're right there I've only seen pre installed systems and they have
all been set to use fat32 and you can't upgrade. The big problem of course
is not being able to join a domain which is something even 95 could do.

Yeah....hence the reason all my PC's run WinXP PRO as my network is
Domain based, considering that the XP Home version costs roughly half of
what the PRO version costs, I could have saved a bundle on those 10
licenses
