Trouble with Logitech MOMO wheel (red version)

by Steinar Mikkelse » Fri, 21 Mar 2003 09:21:24

Hi
I have the logitech momo force wheel (the first red version), and I
think there may be some defects with it. The problem is when driving
with the wheel in center position it gives away a very high
rattling/clattering noise. There is some slack on the
steelwire/mechanism, I guess this could be the reason. Though this
very high rattling sound only occures with the steering wheel when in
approximately center position. This is a very annoying thing,
especially when you play with a normal soundlevel on the speakers.
It's been a while since I used the wheel the last time, but I think I
remember that this was not a problem in the beginning when the
steering wheel was new. Also the shaking/forcefeed-back effect is also
much stronger when the wheel is centered. (I play mostly Need for
speed 4 + 5). I'm not sure if these things really are defects or not,
so some help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have read that the screws holding in the FF motor can back out. Pop off
the cover and check out the insides.

Trouble with Logitech MOMO wheel (red version)

Hi!
Thanks for your reply. I've already tried what you suggest, but there
wasn't any loose screws.  (I guess you are referring the screws on the
bottom on the plastic casing, which is used to connect the outer
casing with the FF motor?)
Also, it would be nice to know, if this rattling of the
wheel/mechanism in center position is a normal thing, or this in fact
is a hardware fault.  I guess for some people this could be a minor
issue, but I thought that the wheel should be feel absolutely tight,
and don't give off any high rattling noice, even when it's vibrating
in center position. Can anyone please confirm this. (-and same thing
regarding the decrease in forcefeedback effects when you turn the
wheel away from center position.) If this should be the case, I'll
just return the thing now, while my garantuee period still is in
effect.
Thanks!

There is a recent similar thread.  Each time you start up your PC and
before you run in an auto-sim, you *must* rotate the wheel through
it's entire travel left and right to calibrate.  You do not need to be
in the game devices control panel for this.  Just do it anywhere
before you drive.  If you do not do this the results will be *exactly*
as you describe.

From what I can find out (I asked this question months ago) it seems
to be how these MOMO wheels are.  Mine is certainly a very noisy
rattler on high frequency FF effects - for example surface effects in
Rally Trophy or spinning across the infield in NASCAR (not that I do
this very often you understand!).

You'll also get this effect if you run FF at the full setting in
F12002.  I guess it's trying to simulate engine vibrations coming
throught the wheel?  Crank it down to medium (or however the level are
named) for a more satisfying experience.

Regards,

Mark

Hi.

Thanks for the suggestions!
I have read several places on the internet though, that the rattling
effect can be fixed by opening the wheel-casing, and tighten the
engine screws.
This should remove the high rattling effect even on high freq FF
effects, after what I understand.
My problem is, I don't know what to look for. I removed the coverplate
from the bottom of the red wheel-casing, and was afraid to start
fooling around inside.
I would really appreciate it, if someone could tell me where these
screws (to tighten up the engine) are, so I get rid of this very
annoying rattling sound. I've found some guides for disassembeling the
wheel, but they don't tell me the information I need. (which screws to
thighten up the engine...)
I don't want to fool around with the momo mechanism any more than I
have to..
:-)
Again, thanks for the help!
