How do I overclock my computer

by Ric » Sat, 12 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I have a 200 Pro and I neeeeed way more to get the sim GPL to move past
12 FPS....  So, I need to know how to over clock the CPU so that when I
get more RAM (have 32) and a better 3d card, everything will work
better...

How do I over clock it?

Thanks

www.anandtech.com, www.tomshardware.com, www.overclockers.com all contain
information on overclocking.  In the end, whether you can overclock depends
on whether your motherboard supports bus speeds in excess of 66MHz.  If not,
the only thing you can try is to up the CPU multiplier, typically through
jumpers on the motherboard.  Some CPU/motherboard combos simply cannot be
overclocked, so be prepared for some disappointment.

Assuming you don't have a 3Dfx or Rendition video card, get one!
If you are using the software rasterizer in GPL, adding a 3Dfx or
Rendition video card is the best bang for the buck upgrade by a *big*
margin!  (OC'ing in your case may buy you 10% faster fps, I'm talking
100% or more here!)

nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

IN addition to this I can add that a genuine PPRO 200 will probably run at
233 mhz. Find the necessary documentation on the WEB-site of your
MB-producer.

How do I overclock my computer

I just purchased a 3d card.. Someone said that the 200 Pro would not benefit
from a Voodoo 2 board, so I purchased a simple Diamond Monster 3d upgrade. 4mb
is all that the CompUsa had ($70.00 after rebate).. All other boards were
$200.. and they mostly were a 2d/3d board..

Results:
BEFORE:
I had nothing on, and achieved a slow... slow.... 12-16 FPS and was sick of
this sim
With everything on.. I achieved 6-10 FPS and really thought this sim sucked!

With the 3d card added.. Nothing else..
I now get 34-37 FPS with nothing on.. Better game, but still unrealistic when
it comes to car handling.

With everything on. I get 32-36 FPS. game looks far better than before. Even
when there are other cars around. I get 29 FPS. Was really impressed that the
FPS was this high with everything on..

Certainly the biggest bang for the buck there was on this computer..  Wonder
what more RAM will do?? (current 32mb)

Lap times decreased, (not in half, but better) more than likely because the
sim is more real time than time delayed. but the car still wants to go
sideways at speeds over 100 and that really isn't fun or realistic.. Think of
the power necessary for that to really happen and 400 isn't the number.. I
can't get the car to stay straight in a straight line at all..

Thanks for the help.. Video boards are the answer!!

Is the 200 Pro a P1 or P2 chip????  Some say one or the other...

>Is the 200 Pro a P1 or P2 chip????  Some say one or the other...

A Pentium 2 for all practical purposes is a Pentium Pro with MMX.  Some
motherboard will even run both (with a socket adapter). There are differing
cache speeds and stuff, but it's basically the same.  The Pentium Pro is
also not optimized to run 16 bit code, from what I understand.   For
instance, a Pentium 200 MMX will outperform a Pentium Pro 200 on 16 bit
operations.

Yes, I know these are sweeping generalizations.

What is involved in adding a second CPU onto the computer? Will adding another
200 Pro chip make the computer a 400?

Is this worth doing?

Thanks..

It involves having a motherboard with two (or more) CPU sockets.  You
probably don't have one.  Besides that, Multiprocessor support is WIndows NT
only up until WIn98 (I think).

It won't make it a 400, it will make it a dual 200.  If your game isn't
written to take advantage of multithreading (Which it probably isn't), the
other processor would just sit there anyway.

I lost the original post about this, but there are much cheaper ways than
this whole line of thinking to get some upgraded performance.  TCComputers
will sell you a new Tyan 1680s Motherboard with a PEntium2/333 that will
take your old 72 pin simms for 300$ so you dont have to buy new DIMMS

No. In stuff that is extremely processor intensive and actually uses those
two processors, you can probably get rather close.

Nope, at least only a little while ago the PPros were so dear that you
could've gotten a P2-400 and a motherboard for the price of one of those
sucker (ok, maybe not quite, but they _were_ expensive).

I'll have to look into another mother board.. Shame the chip I have will be
useless..
