TEN Michigan Fixed setup help?

by Michael G. Mitrisi » Mon, 30 Nov 1998 04:00:00

Just started racing pickup races in TEN until I get into a league.  Any
hints on FIXED setup races at Michigan?  My best laps are around 39.2 sec
and guys are running 3/4 to 1 second faster laps.  I'm using a TSW  and I
can't figure out where to get that much extra speed without tweaking the
setup.  You can't change anything on the Fixed setup races can you?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Only thing you can change is wheel lock I beleive, and i am no fixed racer
by any means....but I do know this....only thing you need to focus on is the
speed coming OUT of the corners. Try different entries, different speeds,
etc to get the FASTEST speed OUT of the corner possible.

Well, I use lap speeds rather than times, but I usually run Michigan in the
high 184's to low 185's with fixed setups. I do not brake, I let off a
little sooner than some. I enter T1 just slightly higher than the heavy skid
mark. Let the car drift down to the apron, and back on the gas gently,
maintaining around 174 to 175 at the apex.
I enter t3 just slightly high also, and let the car coast down to the bottom
to around 170-172, then back on the gas hard.
A big key here is tire wear, try not to drive too hard in the turns, or
you'll really wear those right side tires out. You can tell if your driving
too hard as the tires will squeal big time. You'll hear some squeal, just
try to keep it down to a minimum.

TEN Michigan Fixed setup help?

Hi Mike,
Well, Superspeedways are definitely my shortcoming, so I won't try to
give any specific advice at Mich, but I can answer you that there are 2
setup changes you can make while racing Fixed setups:

to change between Chevy (#1?? in NR1999)=a "Looser" car [back-end tends to
break loose easier {a.k.a. oversteer}]<--way too many footnotes here :-)),
Pontiac (#2 in NR1999)=a "Neutral" car, Ford (#3?? in NR1999)= a "Tighter"
car [front tires want to "push" up the track rather than turn {a.k.a.
understeer}].
    2) Wheel Lock. Many wheel/pedal users set this real low to add stability
on Superspeedways, between 5-7 degrees. 8-10 degrees at Milers. 10-14+ on
shorties & roadies. Higher lock tends to make the car feel looser (to me
anyway), but sacrifices stability.
Play around off line, comparing baseline speeds to each other, don't
worry so much about hitting "on-line" speeds while off line though, in my &
others experience on-vs.-off line speeds can be + or - a couple mph due to
??????????????.
    Hope it helps.
