NFS-PU Nirvana achieved. My experience.

I have had this title since the first day it came out. I was never too happy
with the frame rate until recently. I came across two great little "fixes".
One was a registry setting to let me get 1024x768 with my V2 SLI. The other
was a "patch" that lets me run in Glide mode. WOW-----WHOLE NEW EXPERIENCE
!!!!The graphics are liquid smooth with glide on my system. Still a little
choppy with more that 4 AI or in a tunnel, but much better than before.

Now I'm thinking it can't possible get any better that this. But I was
wrong.  While playing with different graphics settings I went into the
sounds options. I did not realize that I did not have hardware accelerated
sound on nor did I have the highest quality selected.  EAX really makes this
game sound awesome. Now these changes didn't make as much of a difference as
my HEADPHONES !!!!  I read a post a couple months ago by someone expounding
the glory of GPL with headphones and have wanted to try them for a while but
I didn't own any until this week. It was really late last night and I was
trying not to wake the kids so I plugged in my $9.99 Jensen
headphones and I WAS BLOWN AWAY !!! The sound is absolutely incredible.(Cue
angelic choir singing AHHHH!!) If you own headphones stop reading this and
plug them in ,start the game jump in the GT2 and head out on the Autobahn.
You will be amazed.
This morning with everyone else gone to church I tried something else. I
kept 2 of my regular speakers and my subwoofer turned on and still used the
headphones. AMAZING !!! You can actually feel the car with the subwoofer
pumping. I must say that the sounds for the GT2 car that I downloaded are
the best. The in car view is not as muted with this one as the ones that
came with the game are.

Next it was time to try new wheel settings. I have a MSFF wheel. I set the
return to center and FF effects to high in the Sidewinder properties. I
think the "return to center "being on high made the biggest difference.
Bingo----perfection !!!!! I can honestly say I am totally happy with every
aspect of NFS-PU.
I must say this is the best looking , sounding and feeling racing title I
have ever played since my recent tweaks.

Here are my in game settings:

Would you care to share the whereabouts of the patch and the registry
settings with the rest of us?

For the Voodoo2 glide fix go here:
http://www.nfscheats.com/nfsrage/pu/hackspatches.htm

And here is the Sli Fix:

"The reason you get only 800x600 is because NFS5PU
is not recognizing SLI - it's using only 1 of the cards! Fortunately
there's an easy solution to this. Edit your registry under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed - Porsche
Unleashed and change the "Thrash Driver" from "dx" to "voodoo2"
Enjoy the higher fps and 1024x768!"

The Sli fix is cool, great that I can run it in 1024 now, but I
thought the game allready run in Glide with my voodoo 2 card?
What does the glide patch do exactly?

You only need one of these fixes - the results of both are
identical - switching to glide and making more resolutions
available. Caution: After the fix menu text quality deteriorates
and the current gear indicator in the HUD may be pushed off
screen at certain resolutions.

Headphones must be the best-kept secret in sim racing, for some reason.
I for one have never been able to understand the attraction with the
mega-buck speakers, sub-woofers, etc., for the PC, especially since I
have a very nice stereo sitting right next to my PC already -- which is
why I've always relied on the cheap generic PC speakers and my trusty
Sony "earbud" headphones for sim racing.  In fact, if it weren't for my
headphones, I wouldn't be able to get in even a fraction of the sim
racing time I enjoy now -- even as understanding and loving as my wife
is, she would most likely draw the line if this was a NOISY hobby, as
well as a time-consuming one. <G>

At any rate, I've always felt that headphones are the way to go -- even
when I'm the only one at home, it just doesn't "sound" right to me when
I've tried using my PC speakers, versus using headphones.  Of course,
when I'm at home by myself, the Aura Interactor really DOES add to the
experience -- but that's another story (and a noisy one at that). <G>

I did the fix & my onscreen menus are garbled ....but my resolution only
jumped up to 856x480...not the desired 1024??

are the onscreen menu words stuck that way with the fix/no alternative other
than going back to the original set up...

& why is my res not getting to 1024?

thanks

Do you have 1 V2 or 2?  I think you need SLI for 1024x768.

yup...I only have one! but the changing the thrash in the registry to voodoo
2 seems to make the game smoother even with one card....

I wonder if 2 V2's SLI are better than 1 V3 3500??
