NFS-PU...i got problems-any computer gurus got an answer?

by Schlom » Tue, 18 Apr 2000 04:00:00

I just bought and installed NFS-PU but when i go to run the game i get this
error message:  "The PORSCHE.ICD file is linked to missing export
DSOUND.DLL:6."

Now theoretically all the files the game needs should be on the CD and get
installed no?  Plus I have DSOUND.DLL in my DirectX directory so I know the
file is there.  I tried putting the DSOUND.DLL file into the NFS-PU directory
(along with the .vdx and .ini files that go with it) and now the game tries to
start and says that it performed an illegal operation in KERNEL32.DLL.  Frankly
I'm stumped.  I obviously dont know enough about computers to fix this.  Could
it be a problem with the software itself and should I exchange it for a new
copy?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may have already tried this, but uninstall the game, delete the folder
and reboot. Before installing again, use Cntl, Alt, Del to exit all
non-essential programs. You only need one running, Explorer, I think (I
don't use it so I can't remember). It may help. If not, try cleaning the CD
with window cleaner. Wipe back and forth, not in a circular motion!  Then
try installing again. These things can be very hard to figure out.

Good suggestions but i missed the most obvious of all...put the .dll file thats
missing into the c:\windows directory!!!  Works fine now but thanx for the
suggestions.  BTW I did uninstall and re-install after moving the .dll's so
that might have been an issue as well.  Well im off to burn some Stuttgart
*** :)

A couple of things to try:

1. Uninstall NFS:PU and reboot
2. Run scandisk on all of your hard drives and let it fix any errors
that it finds. Reboot again.
3. Shut down ALL programs that are running (including those in the
systray...they are the little icons by your clock on the start bar.)
4. If you are running Windows98 and have Active Desktop turned on,
turn it off.
5. Reinstall NFS:PU. Reboot again.
6. Reinstall DirectX 7 from the PU CD. Reboot again.
7. See if that fixes it.

I know that there is a lot of rebooting going on in there, but that is
the ONLY way to make sure that Windows programs that have finished
running have released all of the memory that they were using as well
as the .dlls and .vxds that they used during their operation.

As for the DSOUND.DLL, on my system it is in c:\win98\system
(substitute your own windows directory for win98), the size is 390K,
and the date is 9/9/99. I am running Win98SE and NFS:PU is working
great for me.

Good luck!
Todd
