F12K Car Setup Ques?

by Jacky » Thu, 29 Jun 2000 04:00:00

I have an  issue with my car setup -

at Monza, with min wings on front and 1/2 degree on rear, and my gear ratios
set right <I even used some setups I found on various websites>, my car
won't exceed about 195 mph on the straight <I am driving the Williams>

Compare this to the Mclaren, at 90% ai strengh, doing over 210.

Even the Minardi is doing 200 mph.

Whats up? Is this because of the patch?

Also, my 'unsupported' features entry has only 1 entry - MIP MAPPING. I
could have sworn there used to be more options in there.

Finally, what does 'final gear' do in the car setup? My ratios start out at
around 2.3, and end, in 7th gear, at 1.2. Then, there is something called
'final gear' which is set to 5.33.

What is this?

Does anyone know of a website that really goes into the details of car
setup? The manual sucks.

Thanks

The final gear sounds like the differential gear.  Try changing it to get the
final top speed your looking for.

Ok, but what exactly does the differential do? What is 'differential' gear?

Thanks

Tell me about it.  Papyrus makes great manuals for their games, so that's
where I learned most of what I didn't already know.

The final gear is the last one in the drivetrain.   So you can just change it
to adjust for the different tracks and it affects all the others, since they
all interact with it.  Try setting 7th or 6th, whichever is the highest, to
it's lowest value 1.0 and the "final gear" to it's lowest value,  5.10.
This is for version 1.06.

To see what kind of setup the AI is using, look at:

The differential is the circular thing that joins the drive shaft to the rear
axle.  It has a gear in it that can be changed.  Ever hear of people saying "I
have a Ford 3.92 gear for great power off the line" or "Use a 4.05 gear for
highway cruising"?  Well that's the differential they're talking about.

I tried to find a picture of one on the 'net, but it was taking too long :-)

Heh heh.   When I was a little kid looking for a new car for my
Aurora/AFX slot car set, the man at the hobby store gets out
an orange Porsche and gives me the pitch "This is the fastest,
it might be slow to get going, or might not even go at all, but
when it does, it's the fastest."  When I asked him how a
car that might not be fast enough to go at all, could be the
fastest, he took it apart and showed me all the gears and
how the final gear worked and was different from the other
cars.
