VisionTek GF4 4600 crashing

by GLege » Tue, 09 Apr 2002 16:36:04

I'm just wondering if anyone may know what's going on with my pc.
I have a :

P4 2.0a NW (not o'clocked)
Asus P4B266 mobo Bios 1005
768 mb PC 2100 Crucial DDR ram
VisionTek GF4 Ti4600 with v.28.32 drivers
SB Audigy, using latest drivers dated 1/21/02
I also just bought a LianLi PC70 case and a new Enermax 350w psu.  thought I
needed more cooling

My problem is, when I play Nascar2002, my computer crashes.  When I say
crash, this is what happens, I lose the video signal to the monitor.  The
little green light on the monitor turns orange signifying loss of video
signal.
What is strange about this is, it seems to only happen when I'm hosting a
race, not when I join a race.
I'm not real good at troubleshooting this, obviously, but it seems like
maybe a video card, or nic card heating problem?
I'm not sure if it only happens in this game, because its the only one I can
sit down and play for this long period of time:)

Any ideas?

Just some general thoughts:

1. Do you have the latest patches/updates for the game itself? It might be a
glitch in the multi-player mode.

2. You may need updated drivers for the NIC card. Might want to look at the
web site of the card's manufacturer and see if there are updated drivers.
Also, I've read in this group that some are experiencing problems with the
28.32 drivers for you vid card. Maybe try an earlier version of the drivers.

Hope these ideas might help.

This sounds very much like the GF4/P4 standby problem - I take it that the
monitor goes into standby and the pc is running but no life?

As far as i can tell this is a heat/cpu issue.

I ran through some things and got rid of this problem in the end:
Reseat your heatsink of the cpu - sounds funny I know but my pc stopped the
black screen problem when I did this properly - I lapped the cpu as well as
mine had a slightly concave surface. If you dont fancy this try using more
thermal compound than you would normally - in effect use more to take up any
non-contact areas on the cpu-heatsink interface.
You could try an uprated heatsink and fan unit but I use the retail one
running my 1.6a at 2.3 without problems now.
Try also a few more volts to your ddr memory and make sure that the memory
isnt getting too warm
Improve case airflow if you can.

I dont know whether it was a combination of the above or either on its own
that cured my problem but mine is now running flawlessly.

I'm pretty sure it's that Enermax PS. I had problems with my 350w Enermax
not suppplying enough juice to the +5v line and repleced it with a 400w
Enermax to fix it. Check in your bios to see what the output reading is to
the +5v line.

What is the 5v on the E400w?, and what motherboard? What was the 5v with the
350w?

Yikes! I made a big mistake there. I replaced it with a 400w *Antec*, not
Enermax. I'll never buy Enermax again. As for your question, I'm going from
memory on the Enermax 300w PS, but it was different depending on what vid
card I used, with Geforce2 it was lower than with Radeon 8500. I think it
was around 4.78 or something, on the Antec it is 5.1, always.

That's funny, my Enermax 350 is putting out 4.78V. It isn't causing any
problems right now though. Perhaps when I upgrade from 1.2 ghz to a XP2100 I
will have some problems?

Brad...

Gordon, I used the stock thermal pad that was on the HSF. I bought the
retail cpu, and it came with that.  Do you think I need to peel off that
thermal pad and put compound now?
That stock fan looks really nice, but...
What do you mean by, lapped the cpu?
I'm not really sure how to do that, as far as adding volts to the ddr
memory.

Thanks
Gary

  I doubt you will have probs. Im running a P4 2 gig , Geforce4 Ti4600
and running a Enermax 350 ps. No probs at all. I think his prob was an
isolated one.
