Do you get any pains from racing...

by Dean William » Fri, 10 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

It might sound like a weird question to ask here.  But I have recently
started to race a lot more.  I race about 2 hours, 3 or 4 times a week.  I
have a LWFF and I sit in a leather arm chair while I race.  I have been
getting pain in my  back and arms lately, and I'm wondering if it's because
of racing, or just because I have been sitting at a desk working on
computers  for 8 years.

Does anyone else get sore from racing?  If so, what parts of your body get
sore, and what type of position are you in when you're racing.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Well I get a pain in my shoulder that makes me stop racing. It's in-between
my neck and shoulder on the left side. It now lets me know when I need a
break ;-)

Yes lots of it too and I'm not "out of shape". I get pain in my neck and
shoulders. As well I get pain in my knee (right one) and even in my quad
muscle. All from sitting at the sim wheel. I have a cool Recardo chair that
I have mounted to the base of an old swivel chair so I'm "sitting pretty".
Oh well I get pain from playing hockey too so whats the diff? (I grind my
teeth when I drive sim too!)

I have pain in my right shoulder (which has dissipated over time) and a
constant pain in my left wrist. Weeks I race a lot, I can hardly bend
it. It's due to my wheel being setup too low on my desk. I have since
reduce my racing time and use a lower chair: that way, there's a lot
less wrist bending.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one having problems: people around me
were starting to say I was a nut for racing until it hurts!

I get back and arm ache .... its cause by my desk not being the right size
for its intended purpose (GPL hehe) .... it means I am just slightly too far
away from the wheel when racing ... causes me to overstretch the back and
arm muscles when racing in an intense race.

I find that conciously making myself sit back and relax more when I am
driving helps the backache ... and the laptimes!!!!

I get that too--but I'm not sure if it's from the racing, or from leaning my
head on my hand (w/left elbow propped on desk) whilst I read the newsgroup!

Yeah, but I have some pretty good arthritis in my hands and wrists from
age(46) and a bad motorcycle wreck. I usually experience some pain in my
arms, pecs and lats after a long weekend of racing. The daily hour or so of
simming doesn't bother me much.

As others have said, you'd best see a physician.  Those symptoms, especially
when combined with pain/tingling radiating to the left arm and neck, can be
signs of serious cardiovascular problems.  This isn't something to be taken
lightly, especially with the nausea and light headedness.

And as an aside, I sure hope that there are no lawyers reading this thread.
If they can win huge settlements from McDonald's over spilled coffee,
imagine what they'd do with this.

I'm surprised no one gets a sore ass!  Mine kills after a few hours
racing....  amd my left hand (I race with only one hand on the wheel) starts
to hurt from gripping to tightly (too tense!)

Do you get any pains from racing...

Ditto here... also LWFF and sitting in an executive style desk chair. When I
"overdo" my racing I get sore shoulder and upper back muscles (I think
they're called "deltiods" in English, not sure). Sometimes after a long
session my ribs kinda seem to "pop" into place again. I also get a stiff
neck, but this is more than likely due to my monitor being at an angle to my
wheel/pedal setup (shortage of deskspace).

In an effort to shave off a couple more tenths of my times (and for the my
general health, I'm not THAT sad yet! ;-)) I have started training again.
Resistance and free weights, mostly. Too early to be conclusive, but it
seems to help.

The biggest pain i have is my girlfriend and her constant whining about my
wasting time racing (let alone watching it).  I think when i trade her in,
her replacement will come from the local short track.  No more trying to
convert non-race fans. <g>

If this is true, stop reading, don't waste time turning off your PC and get
a cardio-vascular check-up NOW!!

PS.: I might have fallen for a "clever" joke here, but in these matters you
cannot take a chance. Not really a laughing matter.
