TOCA2 Question

Ok, here goes.

Firstly, I have never played GPL, really wish I had the time required
to do this, maybe one day, if i win the lottery but I know if I bought
it i'd end up with a failed business/marriage and probably start
leaning into corners as I walk down the road :-)

Anyway, I'm on record somewhere for saying that the FF in TOCA2
is the most realistic single-seater physics I've come across in any
game, now by single-seater I really talking FF to F3. I have no
experience above these formula.

Yes, I do have real-world experience in both saloons and
single seatersm,  raced for a number of years and worked as an
instructor for 2 years so I feel I can comment.

TOCA2 is dated,  but as I think it is now on budget, is well
worth buying. The Saloon physics aren't brilliant and the race AI
suspect (most are) but you get a wide range of tracks and vehicle
(just love the Lister).

The demo is a good example of the FF on a circuit which shows
off the physics, I must admit, it's a little boring on tracks like
Thruxton, where you tend to fall asleep down the main straight.

I've just remembered there was a cheat, you enter SKATES as your
name and you bet extra HP/Grip/Brakes etc. never traied this with the
FF, may be add a new dimension, really gets your attention in the
Lister or Jag.

I should note (see below) that I only ever ran this games with an FF
steering wheel (ACT Labs Force RS) and I'm not sure you'd get
the same effect without FF (I once tried an MS Sidewinder FF and
to me the FF effects where nowhere near as effective).

Still good physics but much enhanced by FF.

Everything in the game is way better than the demo

True.

I find the Formula Ford's to be a lot of fun - even more enjoyable than the
saloons. You can find yourself applying grin-inducing amounts of opposite
lock through most corners, although the top speed on the straights is fairly
limited compared to the saloon cars.

I also find the behaviour of the saloons a bit irritating (especially the
sudden snap oversteer, even in high-speed corners). Turn 1 (right) on Brands
Hatch is one of my more vivid nightmares.

The game is basically a lot of fun, and great for LAN play.

I found it to be the best sim in this regard.

1998 TOCA cars provided lots of grip and then the rear just let loose. Once
it went it was pretty much gone.
That's why most drivers used another cars doors to keep them in the groove
round tight bends !!

I had the pleasure of driving and being driven by Tim Harvey in my A610
around Knockhill.
He was a really nice guy and gave real insight into the way those guys drove
FWD cars to make them turn in (see above!)

It is when you wake up too.

I wiped out the rear end of my A610 doing precisely that maneouvre in real
life - I should have learned from TOCA :-(

The modelling in T2 of the tracks is superb. There were initally lots of
people complaining of a "bump" in the dip at BH after Turn 1.
Well it is there in real life and bites hard.

I've played TOCA2 with a MSFF and found the FF very disappointing . It
lacked any feel at all while on track . I even e-mailed Codemasters asking
whether there was an ini or cfg  file I could tweak to improve it but to no
avail . If you want realistic FF then try GPL with patch 1.2 . The car
actually talks to you  . I've a drawer full of racing CDs but nothing comes
close to GPL for physics and immersion . Very ***ive.
