My problem is that I am always the first car into the pits and I end up
losing races due to this.  It is always the right front tire that wears
out too fast.

Atlanta is the track I use the most and my first pit is about 10 laps
ahead of everybody else.  I have improved upon the ACE setting in this
regard, but there must still be room for improvement.

I am averaging 175 mph at Atlanta with a 179mph best.(joystick)

If you call the PAPYRUS technical advice phone # , will they give you
the definative setups for various tracks?  I realize that some people
enjoy the garage tinkering, but I just want to race!

Would anyone like to divulge a setup that gives better speeds than I am
getting with also better tire life?

I also realize that my driving habits may be contributing to  my
problem.  I try to concentrate on driving the best line and letting off
the gas early on the straights so I can power through the turns, but
with other cars on the track I tend to do things that wear tires out
faster.

TIA

Well I would have to say it is your driving style probably. I can
consistently win at Atlanta with the stock ACE setup with NO changes.
The most important thing in NASCAR is to be smooth in and out of the
turns. Also in  a long race be easy on the tires, u don't have to turn
175mph every lap, ease off a bit. I found that when I tried to go
superfast every lap my tires wore quickly whereas when I eased up a bit
I could pit 10-15 laps after the computer cars (when fuel wasn't a
problem I mean.) Hope that helps.

Apart from your driving it could be that your setup is good but
you have _too much_ steering lock which has the effect that the car
gets very sensitive.

Go into the NASCAR file area on Papyrus BBS and d/l a copy of NCCRW.ZIP.
This is a real good setup manual for the sim which uses Atlanta as an
example of how to dial in your setup.  It's superior to the info in the
manual in many respects.

Try a steering lock of 7 or 8 degrees, it will help you get through the
corners without wearing the tires (if you keep a larger wheel lock, the
thing you do when you steer is that you steer the wheels too far, so they
get sorta blocked and wear much faster).

The major points of improvement for faster laps without enormous wear of the
tires is changing the stagger, camber and shocks - a good setup guide
is the nncar.zip or something like this - it's in Windows write format and
can be found at didnt.doit.wisc.edu in the NASCAR directory (read the info
when you enter to find that dir).

If you can't get it there, EMail me and maybe I will send you a copy...

Thanks for the tips. Very useful. I'll have another rummage around
there sometime soon.

Cheers,

Stuart.
