following cars is very difficult.  Takes some practice.  And mainly braking
early.  really early.

braking groove.  Also, if you're following directly behind another car, you
can't see it until the car ahead passes over it.  BIG difference, as I've
noticed(mostly at Silverstone).

I started to yell, "SHOW-OFF!", but then I realized it would cost me $5000 to
improve by .30 sec...nevermind<g>

Well sorry,

I just wanted to share this great moment of playing GPL on very big screen.

sorry ....

It is a serious problem with GPL... the rather hungry graphics which
actually don't have enough detail to help you much.  I find most of
my braking points are "kind of a little after the tree but before the
sign" which is problematic since "after the little tree" is a bit of a
movable feast.  The long straight at Rouen is terrible for this.  I
can't find anything to judge my braking by except "a fair distance
after the racing groove is black".

How do the real drivers mark break points? Do they look for trackside objects
like us sim racers do?

Basically yes.  And it's a lot easier in the real three dimensional world, even
then brake markers are often put up during race events.  In gpl I find it
useful to use a replay of a good hotlap, and from outside the car,  frame by
frame yourself to the point where you or whoever first applies the brakes, them
go to the incar view while your stationary and carefully look for some visual
clue.  It's easier to find a point that way than while driving for a difficult
corner.

Who was it that said the comments about having a cow as a braking point at
the Glen back in the days ?

I recently read of one racing driver who was using a guy in a red jumper as
a brake marker - yep, you guessed it - he moved along a bit, with
predictable results.

Martin Brundle has said that he looks at things like small bushes,
tufts of grass, signs etc...  He's also said that he's had at least one
accident when a previous accident moved the thing that he was using as a
braking point.

So if you brake early, then you lose too much distance to pass on the straight.

Sebastian -
Didn't you see the '<g>' at the end?  It was a *joke*.  I'm actually jealous,
because there's NO way I could afford such a screen...

Hmm, I'm probably only doing about 240.  I'm guessing, because I don't know
what 240 kph would be...
