DIY wheel 2nd question

thanx to everyone who helped me to this point.
Now I have everything done except the gears and the wiring.

I can't seem to find gears.  I asked in a hobby model RC shop,
at Raido Shack, and also at a hardware store and can't find the
gears that I need.
All I need are 2 gears, one 1/4'' and one 1/2''.

anybody that knows where I can get these please inform me

-thanx-

I am suprised you got no where with the RC shop as a lot of
the RC cars have substantial gears sets. Maybe try a better
shop. Also a Model Railroad  shop should sell the regear sets
that Model Railroaders fit to their Athern locomotives. Maybe
they will be suitable.
I assume the gear is required to drive the steering pot, why
not have a hole drilled into the end of the steering shaft and
fit the pots shaft into it. A small split pin is all that is
needed to hold it.
The above method is how I did it and it works fine. I get
approx 300 degrees arc from lock to lock.

Good luck

I used transmission gears from Team Associated. Got them at a Hobby
store
that had RC car parts. Had to get a press fit threaded insert that is
made to fit
into a hole, to reduce the size of the hole in the gear to 1/4", using
a little tool that comes with it you tighten it down and it expands
and leaves a threaded hole. I then drilled out the threaded hole to
1/4" to fit the shaft. You should be able to find these things at a
hardware store. I don't remember what they are called. A little
aluminum cylinder....threads inside...made to go into sheet metal.
As far as the gears go just make sure you find gears with the same
"pitch" they don't even have to be a matched set.....I have found all
kinds of interesting things. Look at a surplus electronics supply
store...they usually have old stepper and geared electric motors they
will sell real cheap. lotsa cool parts! :)
Looked at some great big gnarly looking military spec pots that I bet
would work really well and last a  long time in a wheel. I had mostly
completed my wheel and really don't have enough room for something
that big, but in my next wheel I may try one.
Hope this helps, feel free to email questions.

Sounds like a threaded pop-rivet (Nut-sert is a common brand-name)...
Any well stocked hardware store should have them...

Actually it is called a hielicoil. Auto mechanics use these all the time
if a bolt breaks they can drill out the hole and put new threads in to
the drilled out hole. just my 2 cents.

close, but no cigar, Pete  :)  a HeliCoil IS used when threads are
stripped, by
drilling out the old threads Oversize, and then retapping the hole
Oversize, then when you put in the helicoil, it brings the thread back
to the original size. it is Not,
however, a "press fit" type thing,,,you Must cut threads to begin with.
since the original Idea is to get threads,,,,,to add a Helicoil would be
overkill... hehe,
didnt mean to shoot you down, just trying to keep someone from going out
and buying
(expensive) Helicoils without need   :)
