DIY wheel question HELP! IM DESPERATE!!

by William Dahm » Mon, 26 Jan 1998 04:00:00

The pots on my diy wheel are returning very strange values and I don't
really know what the problem is.  When I turn the wheel to the left, it
first jerks to the right then goes back to the left.  Also, when turning
right the values are strange.  Also, the pedals move in a similar odd
way.  This always happens after only having the pots in for a few days,
or sometimes it happens from the moment I solder the pot on.
This is after only using the pots for a few days.  I really think its
not the pots b/c I have tried 3 from Radio Shack, 3 from Mouser (2
different models), and 2 from Clarostat.  The problem has been more or
less constant throughout.
Something odd; The pot I have in right now, a Clarostat, waited about 3
hours of use before jumping around.  Then I gave it a shower in switch
cleaner and it went back to correct operation for about 3 more hours,
then it began jumping around again.  I showered it in switch cleaner
again, but this time it didn't change a thing.
One other thing I have noticed that may be the problem is this: when I
change one thing the field is apparently connected to the others and
changes them slightly.  For example, if the gas is moved from 50 to 150
the clutch may move from 50 to 57, and then back to 50 when I let off
the gas.  This is the case with most of the controls, moving any one
slightly changes the signal from a different one.  Perhaps this crossing
of signals is what is causing the problem? (I am really out of my realm
of knowledge in this area as you can see).
Anyone with suggestions, please post or E-MAIL me, I am desperate, I
missed 7 out of about 16 league races last year and the clock is already
ticking on this weeks race.
 My system

Hi William

Two questions
1. What ohms resistance pots are you using. I'm using 50 ohms
   and never had a problem.
2. Are you sure you have Linier pots and not Log pots. Log
pots start off slow but increase rapidly, definitly not
   suitable for racing controllers.

Cheers Nigel

50 ohms?! I think 50K-100K is much more reasonable.
