D.I.Y. Wheel & Pedals

Seing the exorbitant prices for most of these appendages (I
can't afford something which costs almost half of my Pentium),
I've been dwelling on the idea of making my own.
Has anybody done this, or does anybody know of where I could
find out? I realise that it would not be an easy undertaking,
but I am prepared to make it a hobby of mine, if it is feasible.
Any info would be most appreciated.

Can anyones say FAQ?  I needed this info and had to scan thru
weeks of stuff to get what was on the net then.  Has anyone
taken the time to put together a summary or FAQ?  I ended up
using an old Atari paddle controller and a steering wheel from
a driving game.  Making it self-centering is the big trick.
I am still trying to figure out pedals.  I think they may be
more important to good driving than a steering wheel for
NASCAR!

I am in the middle of developing my own T1-like setup.  The pots can be
purchased from Radio shack for $1.29.  The difficult part is linking the
pedals to the pots which have a rotation of 270 degrees.  I have been
through several iteration to this point.  If anyone has any ideas about
the linkage, please e-mail me.  If you would like more information please
e-mail me.....

I'm using two $10 joysticks for pedals.  I used a modified 'Y'connector
to plug them into the computer.  To keep from splicing wires on the
joysticks I modified the 'Y' connector.  The computer sees the second
joystick as the 'X' axis of the first joystick.  Then I plugged this
assembly into another 'Y' connector so I can use a third joystick for
steering.  I'm thinking of rigging the butons from the pedals to make a
shifter on my desk.  If you need wiring instructions just e-mai; me at

Good luck,

Why not just use some linear pots. I have made a setup using a momo
steering wheel (purchased for NZ$50 at the wreckers, new they are
NZ$300+), and two pedals. The pedals were linked together and both
formed the y axis of one joystick . The good thing about this is that
they can be used with practically any game. The bad thing is that if
both pedals are flat down. then the car is actually coasting (bummer.)

The wheel is self centering, with steel paddles on the back hooked up
to change up or down. The old horn button has been used to switch on a
circuit which was designed to generate sounds out a speaker on the
side of the steering box. It can fire a machine gun, or sound like a
horn. There are the switches too on the dashboard. These can select
the output from the speaker to a fire engine, police car, or ambulance
sound by flicking a switch. There's also an on off switch. I am most
pleased with the system.

The pedals are made of wood, with old door hinges as hinges, and a
double linear pot for each pedal. The pedal attaches directly to the
slider arm. As the pedal is depressed, the pedal wood slides along the
pot arm. Unfortunately, this will have to do, as I'm just having too
much fun to change it!!.

Hope this helps..
