GP2 Frame Rate Survey

by SRP » Fri, 08 Nov 1996 04:00:00

 Hi,
I would like to conduct a survey as to frame rates in GP2 in regards
to CPU speed and video card performance.. In order to make this a
constructive study everyone has to use the same settings in GP2. So from
the main menu in GP2 go to options and then to graphics detail level. Set
the graphics detail mode to automatic and your 3D display type to SVGA and
GP2 will give you a recommended frame rate. Then list the speed of your
CPU,Video Card and frame rate.

Mine is:133 Pentium   Diamond Stealth 64 2meg vram   estimated frame rate

                                                   Thanks Steve

When setting the detail graphics mode to automatic, you effectively
rule out any possibility to measure the speed of different computers.
The only conclusion you will be able to make, is that setting the
graphics detail mode to automatic leads to an estimated frame rate
between 16 and 18. This has nothing to do with the speed of your
computer, but only with the way 'automatic' has been programmed in
GP2.

Only slow computers (486's)  will give a lower value, because they
will not be able to reach this framerate of 17 or so.

I cant see how you guys are posting a survey on Framerate with GP2. Your
posts are inaccurate until you
decide what track to compare the survey on because the detail on all
tracks are different and therefore
the CPU occupancy changes. Are you surveying on one particular track?

Let's all forget this survey, shall we? The EFR does not truly reflect what=
s happening on the screen.

Setting the graphics detail to automatic means that different computers
will be using different graphics settings. Something which I have always
maintained is that the best test of speed of GP2 is not to use the estimated
frame rate as that is just based on a couple of simple benchmarks (see GP2
log) and won't give a very accurate reflection of how fast the computer is.
Rather, it is just intended as a ballpark estimate.

Instead, I think the best way of measuring relative speeds of computers
running GP2 is to set the detail levels and frame rate at a certain agreed
upon level, and then start quick race (Italy, Position 6) and see the
occupancy before the green light comes on. Therefore, this gives an indication
of how well the given computer can actually run GP2 at those detail levels, as
it is doing the same types of calculations it actually does in the race. (Even
though the race hasn't started, the game is still constantly updating the
screen and recalculating everything).

What level of graphics detail are you using for these comparisons?
Sorry I missed the original post...
