Day 4 - Car Control - GPL

Well, its been 3 days since I last reported. Since then I
have fooled around with almost all the cars at the glen and
found the Eagle very driveable and posted my best time there
on Sunday at 1.08.05. Then a variety of computor problems
arose and I was stuck with no comp. I went back to Steve
Smiths book and read it again for the second time from cover
to cover hoping to pick up some pointers.
Readers,, LISTEN UP,, Read this book, it has a lot of good
hints as to get around the tracks,, TRY THEM. It was worth
1.4 seconds this morning on what I considered a sloppy lap
with the Lotus. Now down to 106.66.

So you've had the game for what, two weeks?  And you're down to 1:06 at the
Glen?  I've had it for two MONTHS(or whatever), and can't get below 1:08...
Grr....<g>
You've tried all the cars - have you changed any settings, or left them at
default?
You mean the book that came with the game, right?  I've read it(on the tracks I
was trying to learn).  Didn't help.  Maybe I just don't understand enough about
cars to GET it... :(

He seems to be getting super quick at a very fast pace.I have been
driving GPL since the first day the demo arrived and it took me a very
long time to get to the 6's at the Glen. What I am finding though is
that my understanding of racing cars on the edge of traction is
improving immensly lately.Could it be that Tony just has experience
with race cars???Heres a little hint that I figured out "all by
myself".Make sure when you enter a turn that you balance the car with
a little throttle. It took me a long time to realize that more throttle
can make a car that seems to be headed off the track...corner much
better.I am guessing that the reason for this is that with no
throtttle applied all the weight is thrown onto the front wheels and
overloads them which causes them to lose grip and slide to much and at
the same time the rears have no weight on them and they slide too.Add
some throttle and you balance the weight over the front and rear tires
which in effect will make them grip at their optimum and your
cornering force/speed improves greatly.Dave Kaemmer says that a great
book to teach racing techniques is Skip Barbers racing school book.He
recomends Tune To Win by Caroll Smith and so I skimmed thru it at the
book store and found it to be greatly informative.I plan on g4etting
both of these books soon.

Yes this really helps.

I discovered it when I went to a racing school and drove a formula first car.

Its very noticable that the car grips more when you have enough throttle,
so you are not slowing in the corner.
Until you get to the apex, then you gradually squeeze more throttle on.

I guess it is more noticeable because the cars are quite light-weight,
but probably also more noticeable in middle-engine cars.

It's called "Four Wheel Drift"

You should be able to find it by looking in your GPL box.

Grant.
